Which DE are you using?

It appears more modern I guess, the only additional packages that were installed was what EOS has on the ISO. I used all the same programs on KDE that I used on Xfce(Vanilla Arch). I’ve never used timeshift, IF things get so bad I’ll do a re-install lol(Takes little time). I went with Ext4 oh and I’m mostly using Xfce terminal. I’m curious about Xfce 4.16 as well, thought it would have been released by now. IF i rated DE, for me it would be 1.KDE Plasma 2.Xfce 3.Mate 4. Cinnamon.

I might at some point try i3, i like minimal.

Ya i Agree. I like these desktops the most too. I can’t get used to i3 but i keep trying it on vm. Gnome has never been on my list.

I am now running kinda hybrid

Using XFCE with KDE apps

I now have the customization of KDE Plasma , the speed of XFCE and XFCE’s transparency is really good :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

One thing I would like to know is how much of the KDE burden (dependencies) these apps have brought into your XFCE.

Running plasma on both my desktop and my more recent laptop…
On my older dual core Dell Latitude and on my Odroid N2+, I have AwesomeWM running, in order to keep thins running smoothly

I threw on kde last night. Lots of shortcuts don’t work. I think at the rate I’m going Cinnamon may just be it for me. . .

Probably a lot of dependencies, but then again, if enough resources, not significant enough to care. Let’s say about 500MB extra RAM? And I think I’m exagerating here just to be on the safe side, since not everything pulled as dependency will be automatically also be loaded into ram. 1GB extra disk space (again exagerating)? That’s nothing on a 1TB drive.
Having your machine work and look exactly like you want it to? Totally worth it.

Can’t beat Cinnamon as far as I’m concerned. I have always liked it and it just works!

Especially for Hidpi

I wonder if the gnome pop shell extension works with Cinnamon. . . That’s The only reason I ever deviate. Xfce+i3 is great and I just love tiling windows. The snap works fairly well in Cinnamon though, and I rarely need more than 2apps/desktop, and the 3rd is usually terminal which is transparent and fine floating.

I couldn’t get the tiling extension to work in kde yesterday. Themes wouldn’t download. And I can’t figure out why for the life of me kde won’t let you just center the time/date on the panel like in Cinnamon. And I WANT MY CALENDAR TO START ON MONDAY. But because I don’t live in England I have to fight with it, where in Cinnamon I just check the damn box… . .

Just breathe. . . Ugh

/Rant. Sorry for that.

I do feel that as far as a “finished” desktop experience, Cinnamon I easily feels it to me. It’s very hard to find things that don’t work.

Yes, Cinnamon just seems to take the frustration out of everything. I’m not big on Gnome. It reminds me too much of Ubuntu! I am using Xfce, KDE and Cinnamon but i also like Mate. I personally think Cinnamon has the least problems with any updates.

Package number did increase a lot but it’s definitely not a burden , I don’t see any slow down or extra RAM usage :man_shrugging: . It’s just like when I used XFCE with it’s default apps :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

i3 and then XFCE for when I need a non-tiling environment… Which is nearly never. Tiling managers are just so efficient and convenient, love it.

How does KDE Plasma do with Hidpi ?

Not sure don’t have that type of monitor. The de with the best support is apparently cinnamon.

Same here. I always come back to XFCE on any distro. I maybe at times run with Plasma for a while, but I always go back to XFCE in the end. It’s just a lot more modular, simple and uncomplicated.

Question about Cinnamon, is there still the issue with the font size/icon size in the system tray? I remember a while back you had to edit some file to increase font/icon size, this still an issue? Thanks!

It does not seem to be an issue any longer. In Panel settings, after setting the panel height, you can click the “Right Zone” button, and set the font size and icon size manually to match the new panel height.

Thanks!

I’m not familiar with the problem. I usually just adjust the size of the taskbar. I’ve not really had any issue with it but other people do weird things or different things than I do so unless I see it I can’t say.
