Which DE are you using?

It’s super nice if you work from it honestly and don’t mind letting Dr. Google know your every move. Android messages can sync your phone like Apple’s iMessage, and many things in the play store work now. So you should be able to get a fairly proper word processor if onlyoffice works now. Anyway, enjoy. You can get some really nice hardware for a fair price with Chromebooks.

I have been using Gnome for over 15 years…was involved in the beta work for Gnome3 (got into a BIG fight with a Ubuntu dev during that time…I was an Ubuntu Alpha tester then & the dev told me that the Gnome DE was NOT going to be supported because Ubuntu was developing their own DE—we all know where that went…I left Ubuntu testing at that time & went to beta test with Linux Mint-Debian edition–moved to straight Debian around 2011 & did Beta test & debug until-----NOW).

Yeah - we know where it went… too bad Unity got dropped though - it really was superior, especially then! Of less utility now with big vertical resolution numbers - but great then… and would have been nice with the phone and tablet versions they nearly got done!

I only have two requests for gnome devs. Bear with me.

  1. Please let me officially set my own preferred terminal

  2. An official way of setting the highlight color

Other than that, great job and welcome

Yes—Unity was very nice. I just objected to having it shoved down my throat. All of us doing Ubuntu testing at that time were doing it because we wanted to. I had made a commitment with the Gnome devs at that time to do testing on 3, so it was end my time with Ubuntu to test 3 or test Unity with Ubuntu. The Mint devs were glad to see me & I was glad to be welcomed by them. I still recommend Mint to new users. The Debian people were welcoming also, but I grew tired of all the little fights & the resistance to “non” accepted code. I game (did the beta stint with Steam) & really like my nVidia cards…so everytime the nVidia driver dev “missed” some support & my Sid went to CLI only–I got tired of bucking the system.

Sorry about the /rant just want to do normal debug work & help a community without too much friction.

Well—I was just a tester…no real pull with the devs. They are set in their ways to a certain degree & will reluctantly bow to community pressure. Best thing to do is get involved & make a case for the change.

Thanks!

I am afraid, after having used an Android phone for some years now, Doc knows pretty much everything of interest about my innards. I mean before I even knew about Linux and had privacy concerns. So, it’s rather fun to explore how things work on such a device and as you mention, pretty much everything works out of the box and quite seamlessly.

KDE Plasma with standard Breeze Dark theme

Time to move into the 21st century with Plasma  XFCE is just so :older_man:

Xfce! Always Xfce!!!

Every time I try something else, I always come back to Xfce after a while. It does everything I want, and can look beautiful!

I have both running.

I get that. I’m in this cycle between xfce, xfce+i3, and kde.

The only DE I truly seen to keep is Cinnamon on my home computer.

If xfce had a combined launcher/icons only task manager I would try it!

Not sure what you’re describing here. Most things can be done (in my experience)…

Plasma has an icons only task manager which you pin applications to. Unity had the same. When the app is launched there is an indicator next to it. I use latte as a panel which has additional features.

I used to like Unity myself. Currently I use Plank, which provides most of the functionality you describe (with the exception of the indicators) including the launching and the pinning capabilities. There are also other alternatives in the dock category - but I don’t know which are best as I haven’t tried others in quite a while…

I I think that’s going to be there in the next XFCE version which is just around the corner waiting to be released this month.

Used Xfce for a loooong time, moved onto KDE Plasma & I’m loving it.

What do you like about kde the most? What additional packages have you installed and what settings have you changed from standard install? I do not change too much but a little. I am running the Btrfs set up with timeshift & snapshots on triple boot with rEFInd. So i have Xfce, Cinnamon, & Kde. Cinnamon i have encrypted. Why? It was an experiment with rEFInd and the Btrfs setup but i liked it so i just rolled with it! The Btrfs setup seems to keep grub separated from each install so the grub menu that comes up after entering from rEFInd icon only has entry for the specific desktop.

Edit: I’m waiting for the new version of Xfce 4.16 to see the changes.
