So this whole Metaverse

Surrogates (Bruce Willis movie) meets The Matrix meets Wall.E (towards the end where all the human slobs are on the spaceship and out of touch with real life).

That’s my summary and appraisal of this proposed Meta-Crud.

Edit: and the spaceship is one of Bezos’s!

Reminds me of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1BQPV-iCkU

Very true. The only reason I stay is for the 190 friends and family I have. WAY down from the 600+ I had years ago.
That, and the countless photos I have of my kids growing up.
The ONLY facebook feature I enjoy are ‘Memories’ where it’ll pop up a pic from a year or two ago, of my kids.

lol, this > https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Zucked

The term was coined by Robb Braxman, search for his channel on major platforms.

This I don’t understand. (Mind you I don’t need to understand, you do you.) But here is a set of questions I ask myself when thinking about posting pictures of my children: Is the space of storing the pictures on my own ssd/hdd to expensive? Is having a public record of my children’s baby steps a good thing? What about sick pedophiles lurking on the interwebs? What about the child’s privacy? Does he have a say? Can he grasp the concept now? What about 10 years from now? What about 30 years from now when he wants to run for a public position?

This might be just me, but I would never expose my children like that.

In 30 years from now, people will be using an e-dictionary to look up “privacy” which by then will be marked as archaic, if included at all. Even so they might not grasp the idea.

That said, my own upload to these platforms are next to zero. I used to use Whatsapp before but I am over and done with it since the de-googling of my phone. I had a couple of “phony” accounts with some platforms long ago. They were never actually used and are now both defunct.

I should probably look at switching. How to use it on an Android phone? Which is another Google problem! :unamused:

Edit: I guess they have an app for that.

I am still not sure.

It could be something we simply do not understand.
How many of you (aged above 40, like me) really understand Instagram, SnapChat, TikTok?
With that, I do not mean understanding the platform, but understanding people desire to be present on there?

The same might be true for the metaverse.

It might appeal to a younger generation, but most certainly not me.

Works great too. And they have it in tht aur I believe if you care. I usually use it in browser.

Yeah old people are stubborn

I have to say, def see a theme here among this forum - perhaps Linux as a whole. Seems to be that most Linux users are wholeheartedly against most of the recent “social” apps/networks due to privacy - rightfully so. I do agree that big companies have flipped the table on users (i.e., web 1.0 was users obtaining info from web, web 2.0 web was obtaining info from users).

However, the opposition to these services is drenched in a sharp negativity that comes off as holier than thou. I wish more people would have a nicer demeanor when they express opposition or disagreements. Its quite off putting.

Aside from that, I do feel that this has a HUGE potential to negatively impact the well being of society.

Degradation of in person communication skills
Online bullying would now be far more impacting and inescapable
People could regress into their own echo chambers far deeper than just the current media outlets

So no, I don’t see this metaverse ideology as a good, just because I fault the majority of humans who just seem to want to surface pleasures and not whats best for humanity as a whole.

Sorry for the “baity” title… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I can understand that. I’m sure I’m one of those people. Over the years with privacy and politics especially I have observed an exceedingly predictable trend. So much so that it’s hard for me to be another way after so many years of saying “I told you so.”. It would be much more humbling if I was wrong more often. And as arrogant as that sounds, since I’m so often correct, my arrogance on such subjects has gotten bigger. For that, I truly apologize.

For all of our sakes, I always hope I’m wrong in my nihilism.

For me it’s really a no-brainer: companies are for profit. Whatever they tell you they are always doing it for the money. That’s their reason for being. So you just need to keep your eyes peeled. Where does the money flow? If you can’t see it, it probably means you are being used or plaid somehow. The sooner this gets out as common knowledge, the sooner people get a fighting chance.

Truth is I cannot be very humble in my approach of the matter, when companies tell you they do what they do to improve your experience, they are lying to your face without blinking. You know it, they know it.

They give people free honey and periodically come and tighten the bolts some more. The individual gets annoyed, but soon gets used to the new setting, not being ready to give up the honey, then the cycle repeats, until … I’m not sure where all this will go.
