If not EndeavourOS, what distro would you be using?

Debian bullseye? I was thinking that’s my next to try.

Alternative distros to Endeavour.

  1. Arch - It’s what I run anyway.

If Arch + derivatives were gone - in no particular order

  1. OpenSUSE
  2. Linux Mint
  3. Nothing that uses snaps.

Na. No LFS for me. More time for the fluzzies.

I feel like there’s a nice relationship between a bender and his Arch.

Probably Fedora (used it already a bit in the past).
Or perhaps Garuda.
Sometime ago i was a Solus user, so maybe that would also be a viable option in the future…

I was just curious why won’t anyone mention Rebour OS? It is based on Arch but it’s kind of different or it seems to be much toward the graphical side. Like the installer though it’s their own not Calamares.

actually, it is now bullseye, but since the sources.list points at the testing repository and not the specific bullseye repository, my distro should turn automatically into the new distro coming after bullseye, as it will be degraded into stable. That is my plan with it : - ) hope it plays out well …

Yeah it’s still being born. Love their site though, very nicely done.

I tried a Suse a few times but, the software management messes up every time, not worth it from my point of view ( did not use any proprietary stuff )

Both EndeavourOS and RebornOS are descendants of Antergos going down their own paths.

EnOS is the minimal spiritual brother and Reborns is the more sassy sister. I’m going to try Reborn in a VM for a while.

While I have no idea what makes someone a spiritual brother or sassy sister. What fired that actually mean? What’s the difference?

Makes sense. I think Solus is really great for beginners but is missing some things more advanced users will want.

For me, personally, 2 reasons:

  • There are a lot of Arch-based distros these days and I struggle to find something that sets RebornOS apart from all the others. To be clear, I am not saying it isn’t a good distro. For me though, I want a distro to have something that makes it worth choosing over the others.
  • They make heavy use of meta packages in a house of cards kind of way. For example, if you remove the pre-installed snapd and then remove orphans it will also remove your DE and most of your software. This can, of course, be worked around if you understand how to deal with that from a package management perspective but it is also avoidable.

The best in EndeavourOS is it’s very active forum, hard to put an alternative to it
still ArcoLinux and RebornOS would be next

C’mon … you all know if it’s not EndeavourOS … you all have to use Windows 10 right?

I tried Arco recently - there’s too much to remove post install for me. And I don’t use any distro that comes with snap capabilities by default. So both Reborn and Arco are out for me.

I tend to agree, in arco I had to set up plasma workspace myself, RebornOs has issues with dualboot I guess…should be taking something like KaOS that is plasma only

RebornOS was actually created while Antergos still existed. The original founder was a very enthusiastic Antergos forum member, Keegan and he wanted to make Antergos more noob-friendly by adding more apps and conveniences.

The Antergos devs didn’t want to go in that direction and didn’t want to expand their team. (In hindsight, here is the point where they started losing their focus on the project.) So, Keegan started RebornOS with a couple of Antergos members. (Fernando, Joe and I even helped him briefly in that start-up period)
Quite some Antergos members followed him, because of the added apps and app choices.

The installer they use is the original Antergos installer Cnchi and when Antergos ended they, like us, had also trouble with it but they patched it. This patch was originally a temporary fix, because they had started to develop a new installer called Fenix. It was originally planned that we and RebornOS would work together to develop this installer, but we saw more potential in Calamares, instead of reinventing the wheel.

In case you are wondering why we didn’t join RebornOS, the community that stayed on Antergos, thought the distro was too bloated and we were one of them. EndeavourOS was created with that remaining community in mind.

(My apologies for the lengthy history lesson…)
