What happened to steam and its perceived reputation? Just woke up to see an entire thread dedicated to hating it.
Nah, it’s just a loud minority. It’s peoples choice to use it or not and if you use it, it’s perfectly fine. Good to disagree. 
Valve is just very much like Microsoft, Google, etc. and has the same reasons to dislike them. They’re just your another tech giant participating in the unfortunate reality of the current industry standard. Steam siphons a lot of technical info, pretty sure absolutely everything is logged, including your chats, invasive DRM…

Welcome to the internet 
It was to be expected that this would happen on a linux forum. A lot of the people on here use linux because of privacy reasons, the idea of free (not as in price, but as in freedom) software, or a general dislike of how giant tech corporations go around their business.
So it’s perfectly understandable why there’s dislike for it here 
Personally I use Steam all the time.
If it wasn’t for Steam I’d probably be dual booting Windows all day long.
