Is that Bios update a Windows/HP thing? I know Windows always had some GUI things that you could tweak Bios with. That’s kinda nice compared to manual, but I’m not too familiar with Windows so I’m just curious.
Yes…they are coming via Windows updates and it automatically updates the UEFI Bios on reboot along with installing all the other updates. I kind of like that option.
Very slick. It’s a shame that a lot of manufacturers offer GUI tweaks to Graphics and Overclocking too but generally only available when running Windows. Even the Apple kids don’t get much say on this. I know there are some things available within Linux but sadly we are still the poor relatives.
Actually forget the Apple bit, that’s not relevant!
I’m actually satisfied more than when i tried the preview builds. It’s okay other than them trying to force you into using a Microsoft account and all the spying, and tracking! This is the issue i have mostly.
Yeah their desktops are very nice in some ways and the look and things like font rendering are superb. I just (like you) hate having to be tied into all the online stuff and the telemetry. Also I tried Windows 10 for a week after buying a laptop and I found that when I customized something an update would often reset that back to what Redmond decided was correct. That is a huge no no for me. Even Cupertino doesn’t do that. That laptop’s been running EnOS/Xfce ever since I blasted Windoze into oblivion!
The firmware is listed in device manager so you can update it through Windows updates.
The firmware thing is nice but the rest of it just looks toxic to me. I’m so happy not using Windows at all. Why do Windows users have all those columns of icons littering their desktop? Their Start Menu is a joke and the whole thing is convoluted and slow. Sorry pal I just hate it and having tried W7 & W10 will never be using it again, ever. Apart from Gamers it seems to me that a lot of people are unwilling to let go of it completely just out of their own fear, and that fear was placed by Microsoft with their F.U.D. tactics. Fear is the mind killer and they know it. Take the Red Pill and enter the free world people!
Not even sure where to start with this but some thinking out loud… Windoze 10 has been ok I suppose. Lots of bloat but less problems than some versions. Definitely do not trust anything the " gates" family creates.
So, 11 now? Anti-cheat issues in games has been ongoing for the entire existence of online gaming. This is the reason we play on locked servers with people we know and trust. I’ve been doing that a very long time.
There are a few games that I have not been able to run under the Linux system yet but I suspect in time I will be doing so. I am starting to spend more time in games that are supportive or work with Linux more than other types for this reason. I am tired of a single crook ruling the market place. I realize he is not the only one but thats another discussion.
To keep this short and also not devolve into a major rant all I can say is for me, while I might follow or test the new version, I am doubtful that it will be my primary Os going forward.
Linux has every available tool for me at this point. Music, photography tools, desktop publishing, and the like. The most amazing part of all that is that most all are created by people using their own time, resources, and knowledge. Something the “creator” of 11 knows nothing about. My opinion of course so your mileage might vary.
I dual boot MacOS (hackintosh) and Linux. So long as I can game in Linux (Thanks Valve) and use professional apps in MacOS (thanks Opencore), I think I can safely skip Windows 11 .
I do hate that they are trying to obsolete old hardware. I have a 2010 laptop I recently just let my friend barrow (with Windows 10 on it) while their new laptop is getting repaired (they just don’t make em the same anymore…) and they said it was surprisingly fast enough to get all their work done (including light photo editing).
To the average consumer, a computer from 2007+ is still quite usable. It sucks that Microsoft doesn’t agree.
Well mac OS is the same thing. I still have an imac I purchased in 2012-2013, it works perfectly but no more updates/upgrades supported on apple. Ridiculous, the machine works perfectly…
Wish I had the feature… A firmware update for my HP laptop just recently wiped the serial number and build id from it. No idea how. Even dmidecode reports those fields are corrupted now…
True… Basically just like Macos, we are going to have to write a patcher for windows eventually. Which will suck because windows never gives you any debugging tools (unlike mac or linux verbose boot). My relatives use a 2010 mac pro that I patched to MacOS catalina and hopefully big sur soon.
Or… INSTALL LINUX?
I also used a patch for catalina but I am planning on switching it to linux. This thing still has a cd/dvd drive and work really well.
That’s awesome. I used to use a 2009 imac patched to Catalina. Unfortunately it had a Nvidia 9400gt GPU built in (have not had good experiences with it on Linux) and had the hard drive replaced (so the fan goes crazy without a software controller) so I had to keep it on Mac. I have since given it to my grandparents (who had a newer mac mini but it kept acting up and was really slow even after a reinstall). So glad to say it is still being used!
That’s strange? I have been doing firmware updates for a long time and I’ve never had a failure or any other issue. I’ve been fortunate i guess.
Yeah. I actually tend to like HP’s ability to recover from a bad flash. I bricked the same laptop once due to a bad flash and was luckily able to recover due to a special BIOS recovery shortcut.
Im surprised that worked long enough to do that. AFAIK the 2009 models of macbooks and imacs are notorious for GPU failures. I dont remember the exact issue but if youre lucky it just required a reball of the GPU.
Does KMS still work with 11?
I Haven’t tried it yet but reddit says yes
Well, sure, they could have named it Doors eventually, or more explicit: back-Doors. Hence they would have had the last version of Windows. Followed by the first version of Doors.
