Why when you can call it Windows, back-windows
Missing Windows?
Here is a wallpaper for you:
The ThinkPad I got last year - I expect to use for a decade. Probably longer honestly. I do not support ewaste. I think that is actually a super good reason to not use Windows 11. I mean, beyond itās just not necessary with how great Linux is these days.
I used Linux Mint for quite a while as my work desktop without any issue. 99% of everything is done in a web browser anyway these days. So - Can you run firefox? Thatās it basically.
I appreciate a person who keeps legacy hardware!
Majority of the public use web browsing, social media, online banking. We donāt need to tell them to get M1 Macbooks for simple tasks or overpriced platinum surface laptops.
Any clients which do laptop refreshes or throw away old servers I pick from their rubbish. One manās rubbish is anotherās treasure they say.
Windows 11 can be installed on over 10 year old CPU, AMD, No TPM and still get updates + software will still work if they worked with Windows 10. If they stop the updates can still switch to Linux or keep it offline and no updates if relying on certain devices that does not work in Linux.
That a beautiful wallpaper
rest i no comment on
Lots of thoughts about an inferior osā¦
So I managed to install the inferiosity in a Vbox and installed this program that I need to update my Satnav, but look at this!
Upsidedown Windows 11.
I remember reading this blog post of the amount of UI layers Windows has:
So when they announced Windows 11ās new design I thought, great! Good opportunity to clean up the legacy baggage and have a polished Windows eXPerience once again⦠oh well.
The Windows 11 Taskbar was what started my linux-fulltime journey. I used it mainly for webdevelopment and gaming. But the new taskbar is just sad when it comes to configuration. Do you want the taskbar only on your second screen? You are out of luck, you can only span it over 2 monitors. Do you want to see the date when something is running fullscreen on your main display? ⦠Nope the date only shows on the taskbar on the main screen.
So for me everything started with pop_os!
At first I just wanted to give dual-booting a try, and see if I really needed Windows. I used linux in the server-world and a little bit of ubuntu on an old laptop. But when installing pop, I made a mistake, as in I deleted the partition that has windows on it, instead of the one I prepared beforehand. So yeah⦠Looking back it was the one thing that pushed me to my 3 weeks challenge. Use Linux full-time for a week at a time, try a differnent distro and evealuate.
I quickly transitioned to manjaro, a little sprinkle of fedora until I landed on endeavour. I had a little hickup in the middle there because HDR. I installed windows again, but could not stand it anymore after like 40 minutesā¦
And now redhat is working on HDR, so there is that reason gone in the future. The only reason for me to have windows, is for photoshop and tobi eyetracker 5. For that I started to go down the KVM rabbithole, and now I am at the point where I have no reason to run windows outside of a vmā¦
So yeah, I kind of love windows 11 as it brought me to an OS that I like a lot more.
For me itās just windows. Donāt know why people hate it so much. Probably they are not used to change
Itās an sport nowadays
i think thatās the problem. itās just windows and as @pepcak said it, hating windows is a sport
For some of is it is more a habit - well earned over the years, but probably less relevant than it was. OTOH, they have violated the userās expectations in even more ways since (ads and updates and tracking) - and I have never gotten over the XP EULA - which I what got me gone from Windows unless paid (substantially) to use itā¦
Microsoft is the 2. worst OS I experienced so far. In 11 is said that Virtual Desktops should come, not having 11 yet to try.
Still better than MacOs as it is āyoursā and you can āownā it, as oposed to MacOs which is just a piece of copied and mutilated UNIX OS , you are allowed to use if you are happy playing āhandcuffed userā experience of a MacOsās user-slave.
Windows being as bad as it might be, with patches over patches, laid over an old base system, at least Microsoft programmed it by own efforts, not just copied and sell it way over price, Even If you have a MacOs you have no rights in it, you buy it but do not own it. So be more gentle with Microsoft, it is not the worst , just second worst
put linux on it mac just s⦠!
That seem a bit contradictory Windows is just a piece of software you download,
Mac is a complete operating system a big difference,
@gideon no both are OSs, just iOS is the one that lets you no choices, but to pay, both in sense of freedom and financially
Because microsoft is a control freak⦠every now and then I get to use it because of some proprietary software for which there are no alternatives and each time it is a real annoyance. The longer I use linux, the more I see the big gap between both types of systems and donāt like the direction they are going.
