Of course those numbers are mostly marketing, but they also communicate to the consumer. If you bought a Windows 10 ready PC in 2015 you should be able to run every version of Windows 10 with all possible features, otherwise the consumer would be rightfully upset, correct?
But how do you raise the minimum system specs if you don’t want to exclude PCs running Windows 10 right now? Someone has to bite the bullet eventually.
So while I’m of course not happy I’m at least able to understand the reasoning. Windows 10 is going to have a ten year lifespan - which is considering tech history a lot. But now this - I assume - another ten years product is passed on to a new hardware generation. So if you buy a Windows 11 product in 2021 it will also receive all Windows 11 updates until 2030+.
On top of that is the “existing hardware” issue. Pre-2015 hardware was able to update to Windows 10. I would extend the “runs all updates without issues” to that too. So fifteen year old hardware is able to run Windows 10 when it becomes EOL. Assuming(!) a similar lifespan for Windows 11 again up to fifteen years old hardware was able to run Windows 11 when it is EOL. These are not the worst numbers in the world when it comes to corporate support for consumer hardware.
There is this paragraph explaining how to install win11 on a non conforming comp/laptop.
Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet the Windows 11 minimum system requirements. If you choose to install Windows 11 on a device that does not meet these requirements, and you acknowledge and understand the risks, you can create the following registry key values and bypass the check for TPM 2.0 (at least TPM 1.2 is required) and the CPU family and model.
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
Name: AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1
Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
There is no way I’m getting rid of my perfectly good Xeon e5-2698v3 desktop just to get TPM so I can install Windoze 11. With all the talk of climate change and pollution going on, Microsoft can’t just say you need a new computer when your old one works just fine.
Still using Windows on my home computer, since I am playing games that are so far not running on Linux (99% caused by anti cheats). I just upgraded to Windows 11 yesterday and I have to admit, the UI behaviour doesn’t just look sleek, it also runs SUPER smooth. All these tiny animations really making a difference.
Still, I hope that Valve commits to their Anti Cheat compatibility plans, so I can finally ditch that data hungry and shady bloated OS.
I didn’t use Windows 11 yet. Maybe we will get it on our machines at the office sooner or later (currently running 10 Pro).
But my first thought when I heard of Windows 11 was “Wait, didn’t they say there won’t be Windows 11?”
I’m a newbie coming from years of Windows.
Few things I really dislike about Windows 10.
Privacy, this is a big one for me, why should I have to tune privacy settings?
Bloat, even a clean install has many unwanted apps.
I started with Ubuntu just few years ago… eventually hopped to Manjaro/PopOS for a little while.
This year I tried Endeavour and loved it.
It’s everything I wanted in an OS, a minimal default install and easier installation (compare to pure Arch).
As far as WSL, I am just not interested in it. I much prefer a full-on Linux VM.
Windows has one strength that is gaming.
I know Steam has Proton emulation but some games still run better on Windows.
This reason alone means I can’t completely ditch Windows.
It feels like I only keep just in case when the case never arises. I was initially worried about say a HP printer not working.
Never really needed a printer after old HP one broke. Just always used online service to print and send documents to my house next day via postal service.
If I do buy a printer then would choose one that uses USB storage slot, print via email or web browser print or something that doesn’t require direct connection to Arch. Never have to worry about what distro I use with printing.
Libre does not handle office documents well for my complex .docx or .xlsx documents. I mean I could use WPS office which handles better but not opensource. But MS office is used by external contacts they might receive odd formatting back after I edit.
Same old Windows garbage! Tried to update Windows 10 to Windows 11 and got the same generic error messages you always get from Microsoft. Something has gone wrong please try again or contact Microsoft error xx0007xb what ever. Tried 3 times and gave up. I could do a full re-install. I’d rather do Gnome than do that!
Edit: I was able to get Windows 11 installed without errors after cleaning up some system files.
No they didn’t. One dude said it at a tech conference - an event the public usually doesn’t care about at all, and then that soundbite somehow became legend through the tech media because it’s a nice headline. Did anybody really believe that in the infinity of time it was the last “version” of Windows?
In case anyone is curious, Windows 11 will install on a Haswell system with TPM 1.2 with absolutely no fuss.
I had to fix a family members laptop today and we had been planning for the Win 11 update to be more painful but it was pretty painless compared to how Microsoft made it sound it would be.
She cant use Linux due to certain software she uses not working so alas couldnt convert
Just follow this if you want to give it a try, thats how i have it running in a VM for fixing windows systems or running certain Windows only bits of software on occasion.
Updated Windows 10 on the HP laptop using the Windows 11 installation assistant. Couldn’t bother waiting until it trickles down. Had no issue on this one but it wouldn’t install on my desktop. Just gave me generic error messages as usual. May do a fresh install on that one.
Edit: I like that my HP is automatically doing a Bios update on the fly.
