Just another skin + widgets on windows 95.
Great, just what we need: Windows 10 with a centered taskbar and new start menu!
I do like that they’ve finally redesigned win32, but I’d much rather win32 had a proper dark mode. I think it looks even more inconsistent now… but I guess that’s what defines the Windows 10/11 brand! “Yet another operating system, with the latest and greatest innovation in inconsistency!”
And yeah, Microsoft is a large contributor to Linux.
Platinum member. Keep your enemies closer, it’s easier to embrace them before you smother them to death with a pillow.
I was hoping they would finally open source windows considering their recent interest in contributing to linux.
Could that still happen? At least they dropped the spinning live view thingy, then wsl with graphical programs, evolution step by step.
Aha and now this
They can’t do it. Imagine that someone would then compile a version of windows without telemetry and NSA backdoors.
Animosity aside, here are some thoughts.
Like or not, vast majority of users and corporation are running Windows.
Microsoft promised that W10 will be the latest iteration of itself. Corporations breaks promises and lie constantly, so nothing new under the Sun.
New W11 is more like a double trick.
Same old, but new. The same, but different.
A new Windows, with a new WSL. Two OS in one.
Ah, yes. The Microsoft loving Linux mantra just overflows. So much, that corrupts the dual boot configuration, GRUB to be damned.
There is a lot of pressure on Microsoft, negative feedback from huge amount of IT pros.
So, they have to come up with something new, to show their commitment and progress.
Now, it will be free as in costs, not because they are super generous. Not all all. Their income doesn’t rely a s heavily as before on Windows licensing.
There are better bigger revenues for Microsoft, like Azure and some other software solutions.
W11 is just to keep users and prosumers in their ecosystem.
We tend to compare things, sometimes just because they look alike.
Comparing W11 with KDE…just makes me shake my head. Just leave them alone and separate.
KDE represent freedom and independence.
W11 UI is…what they say that is. Don’t care.
For normal users, something new to complain or to be thrilled with.
For people who know better, there are a lot of DE to choose from and tweak to one’s liking.
That ship has sailed. Half their business runs on Linux. No one’s stealing it away in any sense of the word.
They’ll never open source it - The shareholders would have an aneurysm when they found out $50B was blown on R&D to find out Windows 11 is just Windows 7 + the Linux kernel. Then they’ll have to figure out where that money was blown - possibly quite literally blown - and then they’ll have a media fiasco bigger than when Gates said there will be a next Covid and smiled at the camera.
So taking that thought, hypothetically, what part about open source code could be used to make that profit up? I know that the main argument is that enterprise support for example can be used to make profits even though open source projects like ubuntu provide a distro for “free”.
@vlkon: I would imagine though Microsoft would have no problem creating a linux distro that needs to be activated or certified to avoid the users downloading a corrupted linuxwindoz version by a middleman.
But for sure, I would be naive to think they would switch to open source. I just like that hypothetical idea, and never say never, perhaps one day they will see the light.
The one major problem with open-sourcing Windows is that others could then see how much of the code is…um… second rate…? Just a possibility…
almost tried Win11 after getting my hands on the ISO but turns out, the alpha build doesn’t like running on anything that’s not a VM. wouldn’t even detect as a boot drive when flashed to a 32gb drive. ah well, didn’t seem like i was missing all that much.
Also, yknow, others seeing how much telemetry is *actually* built into the OS.
Didn’t M$ make a statement back when windows 10 was released that it would stick with 10 as the version number and just make updates?
I remember reading it somewhere.
Yes. In 2015 MS stated that Windows 10 was the last Windows and they would just keep updating it.
Boy, do they easily change their minds
On one hand, I am not a fan of Windows. I never have been and I am not now, and I do not plan to use it, especially now that I am retired from the working community.
However, I do very strongly believe in choice and freedom. I believe in the freedom to allow people to buy expensive systems with fancy hardware and software. For those of you who are “Apple snobs”, this is your choice and you are free to choose it and enjoy it if that is what you like to do.
Some people were born with a window in their room so they think that they have to have a computer system with Windows in the name, or they think that they have to use software manufactured by Microsoft, the company that popularized the computer use of “Windows”. Again, that is a choice and as long as anyone still wants it, that should remain a choice.
Then there are those who grew up in California and prefer something with Berkeley in the name - BSD or something derived from BSD. That’s a legitimate choice too.
Many people my age grew up and had their first job working with an IBM computer of one vintage or another; that is yet another legitimate choice.
Then the alternatives arose and a fairly recent alternative is the one we use here, a recently derived version of software with a Linux system kernel and a clean way to install and maintain software. It’s a new “endeavor”, so some clever soul came up with the name EndeavorOS. It’s not the only Linux choice. Some of us may use ONLY EndeavorOS; others of us may use EndeavorOS alongside other flexible software alternatives; it’s a matter of choice, and that’s what my “long-winded” comments are all about: encouraging the freedom of choice. I’m glad that I added EndeavorOS to my current list of software that I use on my multi-boot system. It’s been a pleasure using it and I’m happy to have EndeavorOS on my computer.
Just installed it on my unraid box using qemu kvm. it’s working surprisingly well with my graphics card passed through.
Initial impressions are that it’s a little snappier than windows 10 and I prefer the new appearance.
Very much this, - the right tools for the right job. It’s an OS not a religion
