What happened to the 2026 Joke thread?

I feel like that would make for a very strange population…where everyone was in their late 40s to early 60s…

you are a wiseacre :grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

Joke Thread was to me…

…as That’s What She Said was to Michael Scott

In general, this is not primarily about moderation itself or about whether we add more moderators.

From the outside, moderating a forum of this size can look simple — but in reality, it’s a demanding and time-consuming responsibility. As mentioned before, the forum is not intended to be a platform for uncensored or political discussions. We want to maintain space for casual conversations, but the main focus should remain on topics related to the distro, helping each other, and tinkering together.

The goal is not to make the forum strictly technical. However, we do need to keep the scope manageable so the platform can be maintained sustainably.

To give some perspective, a large portion of the work already happens behind the scenes:

  • organizing development, research, and testing
  • working on the ISO, installer, and packages
  • keeping the website and documentation up to date
  • communicating with contributors and users
  • helping users with issues on the forum, Telegram, and elsewhere

This already amounts to something close to a full-time workload.

When additional conflicts between users arise, moderation requires reading long threads, understanding different viewpoints, and helping resolve situations — which can take hours. Some level of this is normal in any community, even in discussions like someone asking for advice about buying a new PC.

However, if the balance shifts so that most forum activity becomes unrelated to the distro — for example, two-thirds general discussion and only one-third distro-related topics — it becomes difficult to justify the extra effort required to manage that in personal free time, especially when that work is not particularly enjoyable.

The intention is simply to keep the forum healthy, sustainable, and focused on what brings the community together in the first place.

I agree with you and understand it takes alot of time/effort to moderate this forum and it could be a full-time job.

That said deleting a section of the forum that let people post random Jokes, screenshot, picture of things, Wallpapers etc…adds to the community and makes people come back every/or every other day to read new stuff.

Going scorched earth and removing popular topics/sections is just bad.

It’s better to add a mod/mods to deal with The Pub and everyone else deal with the rest!

As any community whether it’s a game or distro grow you/thy need a community manager(s).

To handel the community it’s a downside of growth.

This is my take, as well as feedback.

I usually don’t post long stuff like this.

Cant find fault at what the mods did. Feel sad. @UncleSpellbinder is right, @Bryanpwo was right. He and others are volunteers doing good work. They have valid reasons to be feel overwhelmed.

I will continue to be part of the EOS forum and the EOS family. Came here for the beer, stayed for the beer, the company and the joke of the day. Will still stay here for the beer and the company.

@drunkenvicar, @dalto, @_Six, @Cphusion, @MyNameIsRichard , @Mellow and all the others, please do join us to continue to keep in touch. Apparently I can only mention 10 people in a single post.

I would like to apologize to anyone who got offended by what I wrote or responded to in the Joke of the Day thread. I did not mean to hurt anyone. Nor to step on anyone toes.

@DenalB you received death threats? and that too death threat by coronavirus? Feel for you.

Cool that I made the cut in the 10 mentions I guess

But I have neither Bluesky or mastodon.

And I think there is no reason to panic as I think it has been mentioned that apart of the joke topics and music topic, share your desktop and some other things will likely stay. And I think DMs will also stay.
So I think there will be other things that we can share

Yes. Need to understand that Joke of the day and Linux Memes were among the best thread to follow.

I am going to stay and be active. I am just despondent that some threads will no longer be there. They used to add charm to this forum.

Shit, I now know I am Gen X :frowning:

I will take a look in to this since I don’t have mastodon but could create one. I am not too active in terms of messaging though, i mostly lurk more than anything, and I currently have zero social media accounts currently, but I will see.

I will still be around on the forums. My reasoning for potentially joining mastodon would be that it allows people to view content or discuss things that isn’t allowed so it still respects the admins decisions to remove those threads but helps those people who want to continue it elsewhere.

I can see over 25 Moderators on this Forum have the status of Moderator, so suggestion is to just add one the a Thread to Moderate? Like it would be an employee ?

I think it has a reason why Moderators do not act, and the same users do not flag offending or rulebreaking posts. They do not want to.

Employee or just volunteer that doesn’t matter just someone to look after the Pub area.

And allow reasonable typ of stuff with in your rules.

Like a popular Joke thread! :face_with_tongue:

So you and the devs can focus on what is what is most important…making and maintaining the best damn Linux Distro! :enos:

Well, this “reasonable typ of stuf” is the reason that Joke thread doesn’t exist anymore.

Here, you can be sure that we will go full steam ahead into high seas of Purple fun.

But I think we will never treat Volunteers as employees.
Possible to have employees as Moderators, but is this a good idea?

From what i do think personally there are much better platforms to share jokes or memes and music compared to a platform payed by donations and humans freetime, we can use these and meet there with all our friends we have connected here at the forum,

think big :castle:

It could be a discord or something outside maintained by a user, but with this it would not load on us in the backoffice of EndeavourOS infrastructure.

Yeah, well name one with this amazing community?

Yeah well treat a volunteer as a employee?

no but you could give them some “carrot” to not go insane with it all

The day comedy/Joks dies what is the point of anything?(in general, since comedy is destroyed/band everywhere).

And Discord BTW is now a terrible place for community’s.

Thy are implementing age restrictions worldwide.

More Censorship! :person_facepalming: Little by little our freedom is take away from us no matter what country you live in it’s happening everywhere! :downcast_face_with_sweat:

May be no my place! still i will say it any way.

All could be avoided if usr’s just use a feature called “ block “ all so people need leave the school play ground and realize it ok to have different opinions/tastes .. if i up set or offend by this post? No get ur underwear in twist!! :innocent: just block .. amazing you no see my posts again…

have nice day

Yes that is a great funktion if Discourse have that?

Don’t like a post, thread, joke, picture, whatever hide/block it! :backhand_index_pointing_left: We need that! Why didn’t I think of that?! :person_facepalming:

OK it exists nice! :+1: But…it’s not very intuitive or quick to do. :downcast_face_with_sweat:

Because we need to teach all Karen’s and snowflakes that! :fearful: And not spamming the report button.
