I’m way too late for the recommendation but I use mailbox.org for over four years now and I never had any problems. It is a great mail provider.
I use it with my own domain with a catch-all mail address to have a different mail address for every service.
The best ftw
I have over 20 alias addresses there (for each service).
They are currently suffering from DDoS attacks it seems (as many other small providers).
Didn’t notice anything so far though.
Posteo got DDOS’d a few days ago
The one email service I pay for (a bit less than $50/yr) is ProtonMail. It’s encrypted and protected by Switzerland’s internet privacy laws. There is a free account, but the paid account gives you access to encrypted online storage space and “ProtonMail Bridge” - which allows you to use ProtonMail with your favorite e-mail client. (I use Evolution).

I didn’t see anyone mention it, but you could use tutanota.com . It’s privacy
oriented with a free tier that will be more than sufficient for casual use.
Edit: Just saw that a) it’s a fairly old thread and b) someone mentioned it some replies before!
I’m running a similar setup, but sometimes I wonder, if aliases would be smarter. Because, as some others posted before, if you use aliases you can simply deactivate them if the mail address got leaked/pwnd to get rid of the spam/phishing mails. While with an catch-all account, you will receive them continiously.
In the news:
I’ll still use proton after reading the somewhat disturbing news in this thread
I’m not an activist or in hiding for anything, I just wanted to escape the intrusive and annoying practices by big tech companies
I self-host my own email.

I use a dutch independent provider soverin.net
Cheap and reliable (i have my own domainname)
I used to use google workspace but i wanted to be completely without any google services.
Never use your provider email, if you switch provider you will have a problem plus don’t put all your eggs in one basket
I also have been using mailbox.org for 5 or 6 years for all of my personal email and they’re brilliant. All of their included features often cost additional fees from other providers.
I also use startmail.com for my business and have not had any problems - yet. Their customer service has been excellent, similar to mailbox.org.
I do have a gmail account, but only because I have an Android phone. I don’t actually use it for anything else. ![]()
Finally!
Though I won’t be using it. My browser and universal email client (thunderbird) are just fine. ![]()
Recently stopped using the Tuta client too because it’s just a waste of space to have an email client dedicated to one email provider. In my opinion, anyway. ![]()
It is unfortunate that it is yet another electron application.
A proton as an electron? That sounds like some broken physics to me. ![]()
