What are your favorite Android apps? (preferably FOSS)

Love this, but I wish there was a functional fork which didn’t require all the kde dependencies. There used to be Mconnect, but it seems broken and abandoned.

MicroG offers releases with in-app purchase support.

In addition, when I removed Goolag I emailed Nova with the receipt from purchasing prime, and they sent me a code tied to my email which I could use to activate prime from inside the app itself. Has worked wonders for 5+ years.

Came across the following page. It’s a rather comprehensive list of apps available in F-Droid.

I’m still looking through it but I thought I’ll put it here if anyone might find it of interest.

Some of the apps might not working, like Nitter for example, others might be outdated and so on and so forth.

I’m using simple sms messenger, but group messages are killing me. I get group messages from everyone but if I send them it goes to everyone individually.

The Simple app suite recently got sold out to a company that looks very likely to add ads or trackers. Best to ditch them. Some of the original developers have forked the original apps, but I’m not sure that the entire suite is has been forked, updated and pushed to F-Droid yet.

So far, it seems to be only one person from the former dev team to be working on the new forks, namely
@naveensingh

The new “fossified” Gallery app is already in F-Droid.

NaveenSingh seems to have released two more as well, as far as I have looked: Calendar and File Manager.

I guess those will be soon available in F-Droid too.

That really freaking sucks. I use their gallery and messages. . . ugh.

Let me know if they get forked into something else and someone else keeps the project going in a better direction.

As long as you’re on F-Droid they won’t force proprietary crap down your throat i’m sure.
Gradually switch to Fossify when it’s completely out, so far you can already find Fossify Gallery on F-Droid.

Gallery is switched already, looking forward to their messages.

Aves Libre is pretty good.

A free and open source Jabber/XMPP client for Android. Easy to use, reliable, battery friendly. With built-in support for images, group chats and e2e encryption.

Design principles

• Be as beautiful and easy to use as possible without sacrificing security or privacy
• Rely on existing, well established protocols

I don’t own a mobile phone, but my partner does, needing it for work and for communication with her family. Unable to chat by phone, while she’s at work or visiting her family, I communicate with her via XMPP, with Pidgin on my EndeavourOS computer and Conversations on her Android phone. It works very well.

Nice list, lots of solid picks there I try some FOSS apps too, but honestly I end up using YouTube and Snaptube the most for daily stuff.
