What are your favorite Android apps? (preferably FOSS)

I think you are doomed to chromium based browsers. I tried FF the other day and it is still laggy here on Android 11. I went back to Bromite, though I can’t stand that opening a site in a new tab does not switch focus to the new tab. The developer refuses to put Startpage as a search option, but there is a workaround for that. I couldn’t find a way to make Presearch my default search engine and Whoogle and Searx are flaky for me in Bromite.

Just wondering why, perhaps Don’t have yet support for higher refresh rates, still stuck at 60hz.

Favorite Instagram alternative is Instander.
Favorite Launcher has been Nova Prime for YEARS! + Tasker.

Nova is essential for me too. Wish I could find a replacement because it is close to the last closed source application I use. Unfortunately I haven’t found an open source launcher which allows hiding (and organizing the order of) applications in the app launcher, and custom gesture support.

A replacement for Nova? But why? Not suiting your needs anymore?!
I understand going full FOSS - I just can’t.

Perhaps not that feature rich as Nova but Discreet Launcher can go some way in your direction. You can hide apps in the app drawer (swipe up) and add some of your favorites to “Favorite apps” (swipe down) and put them in the order you wish. One can also have custom gestures for swipe right and swipe left on the home screen. And its FOSS

The answer was in the comment, because it is closed source and has access to quite a few permissions. I have paid for the premium version, but I have no idea what information it collects.

I’ll look into this when I have some free time, thanks. More specifically, what I use Nova for is:

  • Clean homescreen (nothing but a wallpaper).
  • Swipe up to open the app drawer.
  • Hide applications from the app drawer.
  • Organize the order of the applications visible in drawer.
  • Hide the name of applications in the drawer (nothing but icons visible).
  • Set the icons I want for each application visible in the drawer.

I think apart from this, you could get everything from your "wish list " with Discreet.
For this you can add the apps you want to “Favorites” (swipe up/down as you set it) and reorder them as you please and hide the app drawer altogether in the settings. It should support icon packs also but I have not used that feature.

I’ll look into it. Nova does not technically support this either, but the hack I have been using is that it lists applications in an alphabetic order so I rename them 1A name 1B name 1C name etc.

edit: hack doesn’t seem to work, but your favorites tip would. Haven’t found a way to set icon on a per app basis yet. Hard to find an icon pack which has an icon for all applications, but with Nova I can fix the missing ones with a manual edit.

I saw that there are some ppl here who use Android without Google (Graphene/Calyx). I wonder how you guys handle the problem with paid apps? That’s what kept me from switching to Calyx so far. A few examples that come to mind are Nova Prime and FairEmail.

AccA (GUI for Advanced Charging Controller Magisk module)
Fox’s Magisk Module Manager
Did I Take My Meds?!
Magisk
G-Droid (F-Droid but pretty with more features)
Permission Manager X
AirGuard
SmartPack Kernel Manager
Open Camera

I have Calyx.

I’ve never bought an app that I’m aware of ever because it requires a Google account in the Google play store which I don’t have with a credit card which I would never in a million years link to any app ever.

If they are available in Aurora or F Droid, you could buy them there. And or make a donation to their project.

I don’t use any so no problem here.
There are quite a few threads over at /e/ forum about this:

Hopefully you’ll find a solution there.
