System Freezing/Restarting

I don’t know if it is kernel related. Or if my system is just overheating.

I am on kernel 6.2.9-arch1-1
Using KDE Plasma
System: MinisForum EliteMini HX90 | AMD Ryzen™ 9 5900HX | GSkill Ripjaws 64GB 3200 | WB Black 1TB M.2 | 2x WD Blue 1TB SATA

I was curious, so I did look up lm_sensors (just sensors) (saw that it wasn’t installed, so…)

I think Sensor 1 and Sensor 2 is readings of my CPU. That 65C reading, is now down to 45C… Overheating, maybe?

I had to restart my system 3 times last night because it would freeze up.

This kernel related, or something else in the system? Any more info you need, yell.

I think those sensors are for the nvme drive.
Did you do something before this temperature reading?

Yeah, I was loading a game, but the temps went down soon after that.

Could it be my NVME that’s overheating, not my CPU?

That is a lot of power hungry components stuffed in a very small space.
What do they have in regards to fans and cooling. Also, in your UEFI do you have control of the fans speeds. Perhaps increase the fan speeds?

They have no fan controls in UEFI. The only fan inside is on the CPU. I NEVER had this problem…

If it IS the NVME, I could pop up the bottom plate (where the NVME and other SSDs are)

Here is what I would try to see if this is temperature related.

Pop off the bottom plate. Set the unit on its side so the bottom is now a side. Place a small 120 vac personal fan on the desk / table so it blows on the device’s now exposed bottom.

See what the lm_sensors show with the fan running. If the freezing goes away, then it is a temperature problem. If the freezing still occurs, maybe software?

I’ll go and try that, but I doubt it would be software. Unless an update is fukin it over…

I THINK I found the problem, but I’m gonna test it here for a minute. I’ll keep you updated.

OK, guys. I found the culprit, and its nothing to do with temps. It’s really weird.

One of my 2.5 SSDs was slightly dislodged, slightly bumping the NVME drive. So THAT is what was causing these freezes…

Makes you wonder…

I have a mini pc too, asrock x300m motherboard, has some weird sata cables, I had speed issues, slow boot(1) with not properly connected cables. There’s a boot message when this happens, but it’s hard to notice if you’re not looking for it. I wish there was some program that would notify you about these kinds of issues, since there’s a clear message in the startup log.

Umm… It still happened last night…

I did try my spare M.2 stick, but it froze, too… So It’s not a heat thing…

I took out my 2.5 SSDs now. See if that helps. I am going to run memtest on it soon, to see if one or both of the RAM sticks is bad.

What am I looking for? There’s a whole mess of random text…

Start looking at the file from the bottom up. Most errors should occur just before the freeze.

Look for anything labeled as ERROR.

Depending on how you are viewing the files, possibly use the search function to look for “ERROR” not being case sensitive.

I assume you are running KDE Plasma?

plasma shell is the shell for the current session.

OK, update gents…

I tried loading Mint 21(my dad had a copy, had to try) on my spare M.2 and IT froze too. so I think it’s something hardware, not software…

I tried it with KDE and Cinnamon. Both of them freeze…

How much swap you have?

Maybe try it out if it freezes without a desktop environment.
systemctl set-default multi-user.target
