Thatâs exactly how shareware on Windows works. Disgusting. I remember how it all started in Windows. At first it was just a few apps, then most of them and then it got crazy, with programs becoming more ads than really useful programs.
I decided to try this thing (popsicle) out - and ran into the same âproblemâ - I couldnât find it! Keeping an eye on things here, I saw it was the name that lost me. So - I tried again (as a command line utility it is pretty pointless - I already have dd). So - it looks sort of OK, in a gnomish way - but I donât see any advantage over mintstick. One thing it DID do, though. It gave me qa really pretty lightshow on my conky, as it hammered all 8 cores for quite a while in the process of installing! It even caused the CPU temp to exceed 70C, which added to the lightshow (graph goes red at 70C, current settings). I canât really imagine whatâs there that needs so much work to install thoughâŚ
And I wonder why I end up with a bloat count of packages! Back to mint-stick, as it looks fine
It is compiling from source. If your makepkg.conf is configured to use all your cores, that is what it will do.
That I rather expected - I just couldnât figure out what would have required so MUCH source code to achieve! My biggest projects tended to take 2 minutes on a single core machine - I guess Iâm just out of date I once implemented a multi-line BBS in under 300K (680x0 assember) so DEFINITELY out-of-date!
It has more lines of code than my WM for example Rust mostly. I didnât try it, just installed, but maybe it is very well optimized or whatever⌠Going to stick with my poor dd which everyone seems to hate anyway
edit: actually not, dwm has a bit more, but the difference is rather marginal.
Just now, on my âtravelâ computer, I had the same problem upgrading balena-etcher using yay that I had on my âmainâ computer.
But when I wnt into pamac-aur-git, went to âupgrade,â and selected balena-etcher, it upgraded just fine.
Now why would it upgrade with pamac-aur-git but not with yay?
The next time I have occasion to flash a USB drive (which will probably be when a new version of EndeavourOS is released - next month?), Iâll try popsicle (USB Flasher).
If that works well and fast, itâs GOODBYE balena-etcher for me!
Thanks for ALL of the information given to me (and everyone else) within this particular thread.
Lawrence
Now why would it upgrade with pamac-aur-git but not with yay ?
Probably something was still resident in yayâs cache. When that happens, you can tell yay to cleanbuild it.
How would you do that (tell yay to cleanbuiid)?
Lawrence
I usually enable the option cleanmenu
for yay in the config. That way, it shows all the AUR packages and asks if I want to cleanbuild any of them.
I just went to my /Home folder (as su/thunar), activated Ctrl+ h to show hidden files, and went into .config and went into yay.
But there is nothing at all in that yay folder.
So what am I doing wrong and how/where would I find that cleanmenu option?
Lawrence
where would I find that cleanmenu option?
yay --cleanmenu --save
That will create the config file and enable the cleanmenu option.
That did it! Now how do I go about actually using the cleanmenu option and when would i have to use it?
Thanks for all of your help.
Lawrence

Next time you have an upgrade to an AUR package, you will get prompted like this:
3 joplin (Installed) (Build Files Exist)
2 minecraft-launcher (Installed) (Build Files Exist)
1 vmware-workstation (Installed) (Build Files Exist)
==> Packages to cleanBuild?
==> [N]one [A]ll [Ab]ort [I]nstalled [No]tInstalled or (1 2 3, 1-3, ^4)
==>
You can hit enter to build as normal, use âaâ to cleanbuild everything or press the number of the package you want to cleanbuild.
Personally, I only cleanbuild if the build fails.
No troubles with etcher here. Been using it for a long time.
Dear dalto,
Thank you very much (again!) for all of your information which is expressed in simple form that even I can understand and follow!
I create PDF files of the information you and others have sent to me and save it all on my computer so I will be able to use what has been taught to me and I wonât have to ask again.

Dear ricklinux,
Iâve been using it a fairly long time too (ever since you told me about it) and I like the program. It works very well and very quickly.
But recently I have had some difficulty in upgrading the program on all of my computers. It turns out that the maintainer made some sort of error in the new version upgrade and this has caused some aggravation for me.
Fortunately âdaltoâ has cleared up everything and even told me about a different program (popsicle) which does the same thing that balena-etcher does.
This isnât the first time I have had a problem in upgrading a program but this particular one was quite annoying to me.
Anyway, I now know what to do if something similar ever happens again.
Lawrence
I havenât experienced it installing or upgrading. I use etcher-bin. Glad you resolved it. I just find itâs my go to on Linux.
Whats your opinion about Ventoy?
opinion about Ventoy?
There is a lot of controversy around ventoy at the moment which I believe is probably nothing but baseless FUD. Still the risk-averse part of me wants to wait a bit and see how it all shakes out.
My bigger issue is that it hasnât consistently worked for me. The ISOs start to boot and then fail.
I will probably try it again in the future. The idea of being able to copy a bunch of ISOs on a big thumb drive and boot any of them is pretty awesome.
