I just found out about Ventoy. I like it. If you visit their page it does show what ISO’s work and some in question. Everyone I tried works well. Very easy to install the system on a USB drive, and then just drop ISO into partition.
Its from China, so that gives some people pause. Not me. I’ve also liked China’s deepin OS.
The importance of privacy is definitely one of those things that varies person to person. If you are OK with a some tracking and a really poor privacy track record, by all means continue to use it. It works great in my experience.
On the other hand, don’t assume just because you don’t see it doing something, it isn’t happening.
I’d have to see what is being tracked. Not worrying too much about it. There are programs that don’t work & not worth having and they track you. Etcher at least works.
Funny, I had to install it when I found out about it on this very thread. Maybe it’s an architect thing? I just booted out of curiosity into a relatively fresh (<1 month) copy of Manjaro XFCE that I have laying around on a secondary partition. There’s no popsicle there
@anon31549144 that’s because manjaro bspwm is a community project and they have their own say in what’s included or not. Xfce is an official release maintained by phil.
I’ll switch to Popcicle as soon as I’ll get around to it. My Etcher install was purely habitual when I needed to make some SD cards for a RaspBerry Pi.
Balena Etcher is probably not the devil, but it seems really unnecessary having “spy ware” installed on a system I try to keep lean and clean.
I don’t think etcher is evil either. Pretty much any mainstream app on Android or Windows is tracking you. Not saying that it’s not an issue, but just a part of today’s reality. On Linux though we have choices and it’s usually possible to find something similar (or even better) to what you are used to.
I don’t know whether popsicle is superior to etcher, but there’s probably a reason people keep switching, imo.
That being said I’ve never really used it myself and I can totally get @ricklinux’s position. I think if you are comfortable with the tools you are using and they work well for you it is better to stick with your preferences than blindly copy those of others.
