I see there is one rom at least for your phone when I was playing around. Could probably find it again but it was a rom I never heard of or seen before. Not one I would likely trust, not sure what kind of nastiness might be put into the rom. For Samsung, LineageOS was the one I played with for my phones.

LineageOS doesn’t support this phone, unfortunately. If you ever find that ROM, please send it this way

This risk always exists. A problem can occur if an improper attempt is made to unlock the bootloader

Do you mean this one? The only rom I found in a quick search

I would stay away from it

If the word shady had a website, this is it.

That’s the someone I seen earlier when I was looking for one from one of the main supporters.
Now is one brave enough to try it..

@Nomad with a rooted phone you can start using software like AdAway but without a custom rom your phone will no longer take security updates. In my books, without a well known roms it isn’t worth it.

I figure if I’m going to make any meaningful changes to my phone, I rather it be the entire ROM. Otherwise, I’ll just wait until a ROM is available.

I’m an all or nothing kinda guy :upside_down_face:

In the lack of a custom ROM for your device from a reliable source, if you are willing to compromise, I think you could still achieve a reasonable amount of ā€œhardeningā€ and privacy on your device.

I would create a new user profile and use something like UAD to disable/uninstall much of the SamGoogle bloat for this new user. You should take care to choose the right user for not ending up removing something you need from your main profile.

You might be able to even disable Google Play Services and Store for this new user.Note that if you rely on push notifications, they wont work with Play Services disabled. In the light of recent news about spying on push notifications, maybe that’s a good thing?

After that you could install F-Droid to get FOSS apps and if there is something you absolutely need from Play Store, you could use Aurora Store.

Also you could use something like Netguard and load it with some ad/tacker blocklist for the apps that needs access to Internet.

Samsung they have a thing called knox which can not be reset after it’s tripped. Once tripped updates from Samsung cease to exist.

this is just an example.

I checked that XDA forum and someone pushed out a hacked kernel which kind of degoogles and de-samsungs the device, but the developer makes it very clear it’s not his fault if your device bricks, catches fire or explodes. I was considering it up until I read the disclaimer

I assume this thread is only for your own purchases. But my lady just bought for herself a new laptop and I was her adviser in that purchase. So technically I was part of the process…
Because my lady needs a sturdy machine for her doctoral theses we came to a decision to buy used business laptop. It’s HP Probook 455 G7 and it’s in very good condition. CPU AMD Ryzen 5 4500U with 32GB memory. I made it dual-boot with Windows 11 and EndeavourOS. Works like a charm… :star_struck:

We all want to know. Does it run on Linux or Windows?

So, I have been looking for a laptop that meets my somewhat obscure requirements at a reasonable price for a while now.

My requirements are:

  • Less than 3 lbs
  • 16GB of RAM
  • Backlit keyboard
  • 15.6" screen or larger
  • Keyboard centered in the laptop

Those last two are the biggest problem. Most 15+" laptops have a number pad which moves the keyboard off-center.

II found this on sale a few days ago:

  • 16" 16x10 4K OLED
  • 2.6 lbs
  • AMD 7735U
  • 16 GB LPDDR5

An ultralight 16" OLED for $600 seemed pretty reasonable to me. Now I get to find out how well it supports Linux. So far so good though.
