It’s easy to see why they feel they can’t continue with Gnome/Gtk as a base :frowning:

Have to say, his thoughts echo my own regarding the direction the Gnome desktop team are inexorably heading in: Removing user choice regarding customisation (what little remains).

It seems that the Gnome team would be happy to ship a desktop environment that can’t use extensions or themes, and you’re forced to use stock Gnome as-is, by dictat, as a completely static environment until their following major release.

And that to me goes against the very core of the Linux experience: Choice.

Customising my desktop environment is one of my greatest pleasures in using Linux (aside from getting away from MS), and it boggles my mind that the Gnome team seem dead set on removing even the most basic customisation options from users & developers.

:wink:you can choose not to use gnome.

I don’t like tweaking much my desktop, I like to be locked in simplicity. Just kidding,

I can also boot into my qtile or i3 wm if I am fed up with gnome. But at the moment, solid three weeks using gnome 40 and somehow it works with my workflow. Also connecting to external monitors and scaling flawless on wayland.

Likely to switch to kde but not at the moment. Its really weird, I like gnome. Don’t know about the developers, would have to read more.

Easy solution. Just use a different app  Or! Just use dwm and cli apps

That’s perhaps the way to go.
At the moment a bit out of my reach but I am getting into WMs’ world.
Very slowly.
