Running ONLY Legacy Bios Boot, MBR HDD , win7

so you format in GPT
only create a boot-bios partition *** not formated ***
8Mo with flag

then you create theses partitions

  • /
  • /swap
  • /home

I have boot the laptop that intend to install endea o along side with existing win7 using boot usb.
But you know boot usb does not have inxi package by default.
I tried to install inxi package from there… but it denied me to install.
any idea how to go round to get the hardware info that needed ?

My hdd is MBR. and my laptop only have Legacy bios, no efi feature. Hence no /boot/efi is required.

Why? Please don’t tell me after all this time and over 100 help requests in less days then visiting the forum and 12 self solutions (being the only solutions as you don’t provide anything back to the forum) you still don’t know the username and password for the live usb is liveuser liveuser.

:see_no_evil:

Why not simply install EndeavourOS in BIOS/legacy mode on your msdos parted disk with MBR? This will end up in a perfectly clean and simple installation and it will be easy to maintain it as you don’t have to hassle with the ESP. Only limitation: Max. 4 primary partitions (but you could make one to an extended partition which could carry many logical partitions inside) and your boot disk is limited to 2 TiB. Not a big deal I would say. When EndeavourOS is installed make sure os-prober is installed and run

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

to add the Windoze entry to your grub boot menu, then reboot.

Greeting Leon,
This is the windows os generated boot menu that i get from computer start up.
*win7 ultimate will boots into existing windows just fine.
*Endeavouros linux will go to grub> (pls refer to the lower photo)

I have entered your grub-mkconfig command, it can’t find the command.

Please forget about the past partition screenshots. let me show the newer actual partition photo… (i have reinstalled so many time with different settings… hence what you saw above could be a mix of different trial), this is the actual.
This is taken from windows disk management:

I boot up with endea liveusb , this is the grub menu.

I just exploring the grub menu to “efi shell” (no idea what it is, if you care, please share your knowledge with me. TQ).

Exit this thing by reboot again using the same live usb, and select Endea OS UEFI (USB) which is the ONLY option i can choose to boot into live usb and install on hdd.
After booted up in liveusb, this is the Gparted

So, Now i will install Endea linux into laptop.

Note: Left top indicates EFI (i think it means it is current booted up in EFI mode. it is nothing i can click or change)
Note: right top indicate MBR (which means my selected hdd is in MBR partition scheme, which is from win7, nothing i can change)
Let me also click on bottom left “show debug information” all screenshot has got “EFI” mentioned only

  1. under “GlobalStorage”: pls be noted at “efiSystemPartition /boot/efi”
  2. Under Modules > bootloader@bootloader:

    2.1 under modules > fstab@fstab

    2.2 under modules > mount@mount

    2.3 under modules > partition@partition

Now exit “show debug information” to start “manual partitioning”… this is the only option i can take (to not ruin win7 installation)
I have all the partitions for linux premade previously:
Now i need set mountpoint to “/” and to flag the /dev/sda3 as “boot” i think this is not needed, because it should boot sda1 - windows boot loader, anyway, just trying I have no idea what it will do when flagged as “boot”

Now set mount point of sda6 as “/home”

This is the final overview before i press “next”

Here it prompts me “the consequence of No /boot/efi”
I want it to install in Legacy… so i disregarded the prompt

    So, overview

It is installing… (i have done this for 8 times on this laptop, tried all that is remotely possible that i know of). waiting for installation…
    Installation finished… and rebooted:

So, now it i boot it up with “boot repair iso” to fix the MBR
the boot repair iso grub menu:

Here i have to choose “Restore MBR”

    In side MBR options:
Partition booted by MBR: Sda2 (win7)

It has done restoring MBR, reboot it now.
In the mean time i just post the log generated by “boot repair iso”
Boot-info.txt

Config file for Syslinux -

/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg

Comboot modules:

* menu.c32 - provides a text menu

* vesamenu.c32 - provides a graphical menu

* chain.c32 - chainload MBRs, partition boot sectors, Windows bootloaders

* hdt.c32 - hardware detection tool

* reboot.c32 - reboots the system

To Use: Copy the respective files from /usr/lib/syslinux to /boot/syslinux.

If /usr and /boot are on the same file system, symlink the files instead

of copying them.

If you do not use a menu, a ‘boot:’ prompt will be shown and the system

will boot automatically after 5 seconds.

Now that all logs being posted, i will restart the computer. and it shows this:

*when choose Endeavouros linux: it will goes to "grub> " again as shown in the beggining of the post.
*when choose Windows 7 ult… it will boot back to win7 just fine.
Back to square 1.

Now back to Bios setting:
bios info:

bios system:

bios advance:

bios security:

Bios secure boot configuration:

Bios boot:

So, is there any bios setting that can be change so that i offer Legacy bios boot mode ? i cant find any that is related… apart from CSM… which is turned on already.

What about the system already on /dev/sda6? You have no free space as far as I can see for a new install. I’m wondering why you are not able to boot the stick in BIOS mode, not sure you can install EndeavourOS if you boot the live ISO in UEFI mode. Usually, you should check your BIOS settings to make sure a BIOS boot is possible, could involve something live CSM etc. Check your BIOS manual for details. I personally would prepare the partitions upfront in GParted before starting the Calamares installer and THEN use manual partitioning inside.

I did partitioned in before installation … i did… sda3 for /, sda6 for /home, sda5 for swap…
As for bios setting… i will do a photo to show it all once and for all… after the installtion completed. I started to wonder if endea liveusb is only capable of EFI… no more bios boot legacy mode

Don’t forget: grub boot loader location should be MBR!

You mean grub boot loader location… which should be sda3 in my case , because that’s where root is “/” … i should flag it … mbr ?

If you want a BIOS install on a msdos parted disk the grub bootloader needs to be placed in the MBR.

Reference:

I know legacy have to be in MBR… my hdd partition scheme is MBR… because it is preinstalled win7 which uses MBR. I have already stated in the first statement of that long list. :slightly_smiling_face: you missed it

No, I did not miss that. It’s not flagging. Calamares offeers you different boot loader locations, one is MBR of the disk you are placing your / partition. If that was not offered you have either overlooked it or it’s due to the booting live ISO into UEFI mode.

how did you create your uSB. which burner?

also some bios setting can cause loa into efi systemd-boot. so its black and white, it would be hard to install in mbr.

thinks like legacy or CSM must be on , not efi in bios. but also how did you burned the usb.

rufus… latest… i chose MBR in the setting. i mentioned this above.

I don’t see the offer from calamares to choose a different boot loader location… I have “create a new partition table” option, which i dare not try.
and of couse i can flag my /sda3 as “legacy boot”… (if not remember wrongly).

Yes, i have burned in latest rufus using lastest Endea iso from github (tried the iso fr endea website also).
I have set Rufus to MBR when burning (apart from that, there is not other optionn i can set on rufus)

just , as long you get the black and white screen of your boot…it only get nasty. if you got to gparted., or someting that looks like it and make a screenshot of that info of usb, disk information mayby it helpt to see. how it is burned.
