Lipowitz made a big jump from 8th to 4th place in the general rankings. But 5 1/2 minutes behind Pogacar would be tough to catch up. Pogacar has a comfortable lead, as Vingegaard couldn’t catch up and is also already 3 1/2 minutes behind him in second place.
We will see, the stage after tomorrows time trial is the first stage with mountains of the highest category and if Pogacar wins that stage and can outpace his direct competitors in a similar fashion as of today… it might be feasible to defend the yellow jersey easily with his teammates, without the need to control each breakaway group. Unless there is another incident such as the unfortunate rash Pogacar had on yesterdays stage.
Anyway, would have love to see Ben Healy in the yellow jersey for a few more days. But he lost 13 minutes and dropped to 11th place in the overall rankings.
@swh your turn for to keep us updated what happened in the past days.
I can help in terms of the Tour de France. Pogacar defended the yellow jersey successfully and was able to gain a few seconds.
Biggest change has been the withdrawal of Evenepoel who was in 3rd place of the general rankings, therefore Lipowitz is now already in 3rd place and wearing the white jersey of the be rider under the age of 25.
They have nothing to be ashamed of. They are on the right track. You have to keep in mind the changes that are currently taking place in the team. Yesterday, they played with 20- and 21-year-old full-backs who have a combined total of 10 international caps
A very unfortunate race for Florian Lipowitz. Nevertheless, he is still 21 seconds ahead of Oscar Onley. Tomorrow will be another hard day
You could say that Lipowitz fought for his podium placement on his own. And Roglic for his 5th place in the general rankings as well. Which is a bit unfortunate for both of them as teammates. In case of Pogacar and Vingegaard, there is no doubt who is the top rider within their team. And who to help out for.
In short, Lipowitz lost almost 40secs of his lead in front of Onley. And Roglic lost a bit more than a minute.
Thus, Onley is the lucky one who benefited from this situation.
We’ll see if they continue the very same way tomorrow. Or if there will be a final decision within the team?
Onley has the major advantage that he has still seven team members that can potentially help him and as the team bora isn’t at full strength it’s definitely a disadvantage.
Well, obviously Roglic had his own plans… which didn’t worked out as intended.
But as Lipowitz could keep up with Pogacar and Vingegaard. The deciding factor has been that Onley wasn’t able to keep up with the pace on the last kilometers of the stage. By pure coincidence, he lost exactly the 41 seconds that he gained on yesterdays stage.
The lucky winner is definitely Arensman who was able to win his second stage during this tour.
But Roglic on the other hand, risked too much with his attack and definitely has lost his 5th place to Gall and even dropped to 8th place in the ranking.
In my humble opinion, of course, that was a terrible team decision. Letting Lipowitz ride alone yesterday and putting Roglic in a hopeless position today. Anyway, Lipo came third, the first German on the podium in what feels like a hundred years. An extra strong performance today.
The last time in 2006. Which isn’t really that long ago.
But if I’m not mistaken, since Andreas Klöden (2nd 2006 & 6th in 2009) there hasn’t been a single rider out of Germany who was able to compete for the general rankings.
To be honest, due to all the scandals related to the Tour of 2006 and the subsequent years, I pretty much didn’t cared about the tour at all. As it has been a pure mess.
It definitely a good things that this years tour has two new aspiring talents that are immediately competing at a high level and will finish in 3rd and 4th place most likely.
