Pamac and the AUR

I haven’t done extensive research on this but it looks like the AUR outage from earlier was caused by pamac and, as a result, pamac was blocked again.

EDIT: It was later unblocked.

Built-in DDOS functionality :joy:

Each keystroke in the search field triggers an AUR query… (actually the aur page with the search field does the same though)

is people these times so lazy to use the enter key ? why with each stroke a new keybindings unless you have a database buildin

Isnt this the second time this year theyve done that with Pamac?

Indeed:

Not really I guess (well, I hope :joy:).
It probably started with browsers and now each app developer thinks his apps need auto-suggest as well to be attracktive.

I lean towards a 3 strike rule, but this is the same issue 2 times this year and Pamac causing issues for everyone not just pamac users.

If they do it a 3rd time Im of the opinion the block should be for a long while or permanent but Im also fairly low tolerance for these sorts of things.

Interesting is the reaction in the Manjaro Forum:

The fault is with the users. They should not abuse the search function. This is weird.

Yes, I read that and thought the same thing.

Hey kids, DO NOT press that big red button!

Sure. Instead of typing in a package name they first need to write down the full name in an editor and then copy paste it into the searchfield in pamac. Problem solved :joy:

The part about

"The in-house package manager shipped with Manjaro - Pamac - contains functionality which - when used without thinking - easily contributes to the overload of AUR "

sounds like an issue with Pamac not the user. The user is just using the tools given to them in a sensible way but Pamac itself is causing the issue.

This isnt a User error and blaming Users simply doesnt make sense. Yay, Trizen, etc. dont cause this sort of issue so how are we blaming the users here?

My hope is that the post was written before the cause was fully understood.

You’ve probably missed few seasons of “Manjaro downfall” opera

I havent, but Ive also gotten in hot water before voicing my opinions on the subject too strongly so I lean on the side of caution in that regard now.

Looks like it was just unblocked.

even if thats the case is blaming users really the right approach?

Im of the opinion that the answer to that is no, especially if youre targeting more newbie users with a distro. That just alienates users and breads mistrust and resentment.
