Update @ Suyu
I was trying to be positive, but there goes that!
One huge example is how supportive they are of open source projects. FLOSS projects using GitLab can get free access to the enterprise tooling through the GitLab for Open Source Program:

It needs to be a legit FLOSS project, i.e. all code is open and the project does not sell products or services for money (see: Who Qualifies?). Most Linux distros qualify for this.
GitLab also has both more features, and better features than GitHub. You can really go nuts with the CI tooling if you want to.

I can’t even look at a repo without signing in, which already makes me hate them.
You are probably thinking of the Arch Linux GitLab instance. I don’t know why they set it up like that; I agree it is super annoying. Most GitLab projects are not like that. Usually you can just browse the code without even having an account if you want.
Update:
In case anyone is wondering what happened with Suyu. They are now self-hosting their own git @ their website. Long Live FOSS Emulation!
suyu, pronounced sue-you (wink wink) is the continuation of the world's most popular, open-source, Nintendo Switch emulator, yuzu. It is written in C++ with portability in mind, and we actively maintain builds for Windows, Linux and Android.
While Nintendo took down the Nintendo Switch emulator yuzu, the collateral damage was the Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra which was also taken offline but Lemonade is an attempt to keep it going.
I don’t know why the even bother GitHub…but here we go again, surely they should have a website + git too
