New nVidia driver does not allow logging in to desktop

The nVidia driver was updated today, After rebooting, I could not log in; I entered my password and it returned me to the display manager,

I tried

sudo mkinitcpio -P

from the console, but it made no difference. I’m currently running Nouveau. If I install nVidia, it’ll happen again.

Does anybody know about this? Is it a known bug? It never happened before.

Can we see inxi -Fxxxz so we can understand your hardware?

@oldrocker0909
Your video card is an RTX 2060 which is supported by the latest Nvidia driver. If you are game to try this then i will write it out. First of all run the installer in test mode and see if gets any errors. This will not make any changes or install the drivers. It is just a test simulation.

sudo nvidia-installer-dkms -t

If there are no errors then you can go ahead and install the Nvidia drivers but do not reboot. We will add the enhancements first.

sudo nvidia-installer-dkms

After installing the Nvidia drivers and when it is completely finished use nano to edit these files.

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Add this to the default grub command line after quiet.

nvidia-drm.modeset=1

To save the file
ctrl + o then enter

To exit nano
ctrl + x

Then update grub

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Now force early load KMS

sudo nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

Add to MODULES=

MODULES="nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm"

To save the file
ctrl + o then enter

To exit nano
ctrl + x

Then rebuild the modules with

sudo mkinitcpio -P

Add enhancements for screen tearing

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

Make sure the file has all of this in it.

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Nvidia Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"
        Option "TripleBuffer" "on"
        Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
EndSection

To save the file
ctrl + o then enter

To exit nano
ctrl + x

Install the nvidia-hook package

sudo pacman -S nvidia-hook

Then reboot

Edit: I’m suggesting this since you already have the drivers uninstalled and running on nouveau. Well see if it works.

I just updated and had the Nvidia drivers and no issue on a GTX 1060.

Have you done that?

@ricklinux @keybreak
have you updated xnvctrl ( this is for Nvidia-setting ) from your side ?

I followed your instructions exactly.
nvidia-drm.modeset=1
was already in the quiet line of /etc/defaultgrub; I didn’t change it.

Rebooted and I still can’t log in to MATE.

In the mean time you can boot into “safe graphics mode” by replacing that same line with just “nomodeset” (without quotes) and then press Ctrl + X to reboot.

Well I’m surprised on one hand and not on the other when it comes to Nvidia. But yet, i don’t seem to have these issues with my card? I guess roll back the three updates if you can using downgrade and see if that works.

Did that, and now it’s stuck at the “Starting version 249.7-2-arch” screen.

This is getting old.

I don’t have xnvctrl on my system.

Edit: I didn’t also have nvidia-settings installed but i just installed it all and no issue so far.

Edit2:

[ricklinux@eos-xfce ~]$ pacman -Q | grep nvidia
nvidia-dkms 495.46-1

nvidia-installer-dkms 3.3.11-1
nvidia-settings 495.46-1
nvidia-utils 495.46-1
[ricklinux@eos-xfce ~]$

i have this

nvidia-dkms 495.44-6
nvidia-installer-db 2.5.2-2
nvidia-installer-dkms 3.3.11-1
nvidia-utils 495.44-6

i get this if i try version 495.46

I have this version.

libxnvctrl

Screenshot_20211214_125008

You need to force the rebuild of the DKMS Modules from nvidia:

Posted it here already.

Well, tried to reinstall and got a formatting error for sda2, my root partition, from the installer and from Gparted. Ordered a new SSD and hope it’s just bad hardware.

Is all of this needed? I have installed EndeavourOS a while ago (and selected “EnedavourOS NVIDIA” on the ISO at that time) for my GTX 1060 and everything has worked since then… Should I still follow those steps?

Also do I need to add nvidia-drm.modeset=1 to the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 nowatchdog" - I can’t find the quiet in my grub.cfg.

Thank you for your help.

No. normally no.

If you have now problem to start your desktop, try first to rebuild the modules.
