Looks like Micron is going to stop making commercial memory in favor of A.I

This bubble needs to pop!

They’re servers need to implode.
People may want to rethink buying Crucial SSDs, as I would assume these will not have a proper warranty anymore if they were to break after they cease consumer memory business.
Can’t wait for Enron 2.0
The Arstechnica writeup of this says that Micron “will honor warranties on existing products”.
One minuscule silver lining that has occurred to me is that moves like this will further slow the adoption of Windows 11 by making new W11 compatible hardware more expensive. This is likely to lead to further Linux adoption on existing machines.
Maybe AI will finally & accidentally bring the Year of the Linux Desktop in 2026 ![]()
Good to know for anyone who end up buying them. Would be interesting to see how they would go about that as I assume there wouldn’t be any replacements unless they have a load of spares sitting around somewhere.
My uneducated guess is that they can predict the numbers needed based on fail rates so far?
A possibility now that you mention it so you are probably right, I think EVGA mentioned something like this when they left the GPU space if I remember correctly.
I think this is a shame, as I have enjoyed installing Crucial SSDs for myself, my family, and my friends. I have installed quite a few MX500s in particular.
I just hope that there will still be a end customer market left in the “end.” By that I mean that more large companies are deciding to only offer products for servers etc. to other companies because there is significantly more money to be made there than with end customers.
Edit:
I currently have a Crucial P5 with 2TB, an MX500 with 1TB, and 4TB installed in my main PC. I have also installed Crucial RAM (DDR3) in older laptops.
Ram prices are insane, 2 years ago i bought 64 gb (2x 32GB) for €149 euros from a shop in Germany because no one had these samsung rams in the Netherlands. Today i checked how much it would cost me now.

This is crazy. Had a few Crusial RAMs. At the moment the price for RAM is three times high.
I can only hope that other Brands don’t go the Micron way…
And yes, AI bubble has to pop ![]()
All rams are going up in prices, see my post above. I still have the mail from 2 years ago what i paid for it.
Edit: From 2023
SSDs, RAM and GPUs will become even more expensive over time.
Edit:
I’m waiting to see what happens. I was planning to upgrade (new RAM, motherboard and CPU) when AM6 comes out (a few months later). At the moment, I’m really unsure whether that will even be possible at reasonable prices.
What I think will be interesting here is that Windows 10 Just went EOL in October. The new Requirements for Window’s 11 make it where most were needing to upgrade the System anyways. Now that This has happened I do wonder if it will bring more people over to Linux?
I also worry about other companies following suite. Micron could be just the tip of the iceberg. I mean lets face it they can make more money from each other than they can Consumers.
They’ll all follow each other like lemmings to the cliff, and then have the cheek to demand the rest of us bail them out after the crash ![]()
Just glad I built my rig last year, the prices of DDR5 memory right now are egregious. Will stick with the 6700XT and 7800X3d now for as long as I can. The 6700XT absolutely screams at 1440p, stunningly good card for Linux.
(Looking forward to the AI bubble popping and memory prices dropping through the floor..)
We’ll see if there’s any electronic manufacturers left when the bubble bursts. Let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later.
I’ve also been looking to update my system with new motherboard, cpu and ram, but I think I’ll hold off for the time being.

I made a point of building two new AM5 machines before the Orange Turnip took office cause I knew at least one thing if not multiple things would go south under IT. One 7700x and nVidia 5060, and mine 7700x and AMD 9060.
