Metal Talk

I never thought of that before, but since you from there, are there some cool New Zeland bands in death / extreme?

I remember that in the game Sacred 2 (a german clone of Diablo) there was a show of Blind Guardian. When you had completed a certain quest series, there was an invitation for the show. It was a long time ago, but you never forget something like that.

The two main ones that come to mind are Ulcerate and Vassafor. A few others but they are the cream of the crop, especially Ulcerate.

Thx, i’ll check em out, i believe i’ve heard some of Ulcerate before though :metal:

Ulcerate are in a league of their own. One of the best bands in the DM scene right now.

Yeah they’re pretty damn good, i’ve heard that album and loved it:

Very atmospheric

Back when i use to play guitar these were my favorites

and who doesnt love some Dethklok?

Their first two were already pretty good but they really stepped it up with Everything Is Fire and have continued on from there.

I can relate to that, I always liked some of the more popular songs (for non-metalheads) like some of Metallica or Iron Maiden. However, if I would have to name the album that got me real into Metal, it is exactly this album: Nightwish Endless Forms Most Beautiful. From that onward I found myself more in the symphonic/opera/epic metal sub-genres, with Nightwish, Within Temptation, Delain, Avantasia, Edguy, Epica, Diabulus in Musica and various others becoming part of favorite bands.

To add something you may not know yet, you can check out the quite new and (compared to the other bands mentioned here) unknown symphonic metal band Once. They released their first album in 2018 after a crowdfunding campaign. This was their first music video they made after a previous crowdfunding campaign:

Actually that rare beast: a Christian Metal Head here. :innocent:

So 1989 comes along, and I hear “Am I Evil” by Metallica on Auckland’s bFM student radio. Until then the most metal I had really got was Split Enz’s “I see red” or Icehouse’s “Nothing too serious”. So I head down to Real Groovy Records on Queen Street and bought Metallica’s Kill 'Em All. Shortly thereafter getting Master, Ride, and an Anthrax I cannot remember.
Then I met this dude called Jesus…and discovered Christian metal.
Then I wore this out : Bride- Live To Die- Live To Die - YouTube
And discovered these guys who are phenomenal:
King's X - 1 - In The New Age - Out Of The Silent Planet (1988) - YouTube

So I don’t have favourites other than singer of Bride, Dale Thompson, who ironically moved from Kentucky to south Auckland a few years ago, marrying a kiwi chick. And I have love of Korn guitarist’s Brian Head Welch and his side project Love & Death.

For me the message is of primary importance now, as the negativity and hypocrisy of the secular metal scene got to me, but the musicianship is still important, and I love the technicality and passion of metal.

Rock on dudes!
