To me one of recent discoveries was anything from Car bomb
Holy hell!
Energy, riffs, drums…
Uniqueness: Meshuggah and especially Fredrik Thordendal!
I love that song with Celtic Frost!

My first album would be Master of Puppets in 1988 when I was 11…
Since then, I listen to all kinds of Metal.
But somehow, i keep returning to Thrash and Death of the eighties and nineties.
I’m a big fan of Within Temptation. Hyper-commercial, but hyper-professional. If you like Nightwish, you might wanna check out their latest couple of albums.
Also, check out Delain in this genre.
So am I! But I grew up in the former GDR (East Germany or "Russian Germany). There and in this time it was extremely difficult or impossible to get good metal music, unless you record somewhat something from the radio. Now that I’m much older, my musical interest has also expanded a lot. There is just too much good music to commit to (not only metal, I also like Blues very much). But Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Deep Purple are still very far away from me. Also Amon Amarth, Iced Earth, Arch Enemy …
And I like the german band Equilibrium!
I don’t listen to Metal music very much nowadays, but my favourite bands back in the days were Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir (best with symphonic orchestra!), Heaven Shall Burn, and above all, Dornenreich.
Now, as a (very mediocre) pianist, I’m back to classical music.
Bach, Chopin and Schumann
So basically you got back to metal roots, how metal is that?!
P.S. Bach - Metal OG!
Yes and no. I started with classical music as a kid
You and my eldest son would get on very well. That is his favourite Mayhem album too.
Don’t tell my wife but my youngest son is named after Tomas Haake ![]()
I love Meshuggah. Amazing band.
The kind of epic, grand and majestic metal that got me hooked as a kid. Goddamn great! Metal is so diverse.
If you are into old school extreme metal, Japanese Sabbat is something…else!
Here is an interview with the main man, Gazol. I doubt there are anyone alive more METAL than this guy, he is a treasure!

Metallucifer, one of his side projects:
My then 5-years old son wanted to know one day which music I listen to on my phone when I’m travelling with the bus to work. I told that the bands name is Exodus. He wanted to hear something of them so I played him “Throwing Down” from “Tempo of the Damned”. He liked it, and the next couple of weeks we had to listen to this song in the car,… He even let us write “Exodus” in one of his kindergarten “My Friends” books under the category “Music I like to dance to”.
Awesome story
I always played my music for my kids with no pressure on them to like Metal as much as I do. My eldest is a huge Metal head, with plans of forming his own band (he is already an accomplished drummer) and talking about a solo Black Metal project.
My youngest likes what his mother likes, dance music. Though I did notice he was playing Master of Puppets on his Spotify the other day…the spark of hope is still alive.
A friend gave me a copied cassette of Master of Puppets around 1987 which I still may have somewhere.
Can’t believe that I still listen to it, and lately a lot again
Next year, I bought …and Justice For All on cassette too. The workers at the disco shop knew me well, because I stopped almost everyday asking when they’ll receive this album.
Ancient memories!
That’s great. My son just started to play guitar, but he wants to play electric guitar one day.
