Laptop Display Not Working, External Monitors Work

Hi Everyone,
I had created this thread a few weeks ago: Cannot boot into live environment

The gist is that the live USB provides 3 boot options: default, nvidia, or fallback (NOMODESET). In fallback mode, X11 would throw an error and would not start. In either of the other 2 modes (default or nvidia), I would just get a black screen. This was using the Apollo release, but I had the same issue with Artemis. I could not even switch to a terminal to get logs. However, I tried my external monitors and they are recognized and working. Specifically, the external monitors start working when the internal display stops working; early in the boot process. Since I can now install and provide proper log output, I’m starting a new thread that reflects the current issue.

My laptop is an MSI CreatorPro Z17

I installed Endeavour using the default (no NVidia driver) option and chose Cinnamon as my DE. (Choosing to install the Nvidia driver at installation time still results in my laptop display not being detected, but if someone wants to see logs with that option chosen, I can do that). I appreciate anyone who may be able to help figure out what’s going on with my laptop display.

It says eDP1 is connected but has no modes. I’ve seen an Arch document on manually adding modes, but I’m wondering why the supported modes aren’t being probed directly from the display.

Please let me know what other logs or info may be relevant. Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to take a look at this.

Have you tried setting the kernel parameter ibt=off in the default grub command line and update grub. Then see if the nvidia drivers will install and be recognized.

Thank you for the suggestion. I added the ibt=off parameter to the default grub command line and updated grub. Afterwards, I installed the Nvidia drivers using the --prime and --32 switches (for Steam) with no issues. However, the laptop display is still blank. After installing the Nvidia driver, I now see some modes listed for eDP1 when running xrandr, but they are not correct for my display.

For example, my display is 2560x1600 @ 165Hz, so 4096x2304 @ 59.98Hz should not be listed as an option. And there is no option for 2560x1600 @ 165Hz. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

I’m assuming it’s edp1. Have you tried to set it with xrandr?

Edit: My personal opinion is that it relates to hardware with the Intel i9-12900H and the Nvidia A5500.

Edit Have you checked the bios to make sure there isn’t a setting to change?

I tried to set three different modes with xrandr but they all failed with a ‘crtc x failed’ as shown below for one example:

Yeah, that was one of the first things that came up with some searching. That thread talks about adding the display’s native resolution ‘following some guidelines on the forum’ but they don’t say where these guidelines came from. Some more searching led me to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xrandr which is how I came up with the commands for creating, adding, and setting a new mode as shown in my previous post.

If you or anyone else has any other ideas, please let me know. In the meantime, I’ll try bugging MSI about this and see if anything turns up. When my work got me a Precision 7540 back in 2019, it took Dell 6 months to come up with a BIOS that would let me boot Linux without the charger plugged in (and that laptop officially supported Linux). This is also new hardware, so I just need to be patient; these things take time to sort out.

Yes, bugging MSI is a good idea. Also keep checking for UEFI Bios updates.

Is it possible that you have set your system to some kind of presentation mode (using the keyboard’s function keys)?

Edit: Also F11 switches display from laptop to external and or both! Maybe check this.

Hi, and thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. I have a function key (F11) that will disable the external monitors, but it does not enable the internal display. I also noticed the new UEFI/BIOS update, but unfortunately, flashing that had no effect.

I did see something on one of the MSI forums (can’t find it right now) that talked about using a Windows program called MSI Control Center to adjust a switch for integrated or discrete graphics. I’m not sure if this is just a Windows version of Optimus, or if there is some kind of actual electronic switch that can only be adjusted via Windows. That also seems like a long shot, but I’m going to try installing a couple distros in a dual-boot setup with Windows and see what effect that Windows software switch has on the Linux installs. I’m not gonna lie. I feel a little dirty installing Windows, but it’s just an experiment.

Well i got that information from the manual for your laptop and that is what it say’s. F11 is supposed to switch between the LCD external monitor or both running. I do realize that all these laptops are designed around working with Windows. But this is a hardware function and should work on Linux.

You’re 100% right about the F11 key for switching monitor outputs. I can use that key to cycle between 3 different modes: internal display only, external displays only, or all displays. Based on that, I would expect the external displays to turn off every 3rd time I hit that key. I do see that behavior, it’s just that the internal display never turns on no matter how many times I hit that key.

It’s not my exact laptop model but I believe I have the same kind of ‘mux switch’ described in the known issues section. If that’s the case, then doing a dual boot with Windows may be my best approach for controlling which GPU is in use. I think I need a couple shots of tequila before I can bring myself to do that, but I’m working up to it. I appreciate all of your help and ideas.

So my question is this? Have you tried the laptop using just the main laptop screen without hooking up any external monitor? Does it work then with nvidia?

Short answer is no. With just the laptop display, I could not get a working live environment to install the system. The laptop display would go blank after a few seconds of kernel boot log, regardless of whether I picked the default or Nvidia options. Using the fallback mode would leave me in an unresponsive terminal telling me that X continues to fail to start every 10 seconds or so. When I tried hooking up the external monitors, that was the first time I’ve been able to get a Linux GUI on any distro other than Ubuntu (and even then I had to select the safe graphics option in their live USB menu).

Did you try it though pressing the F11 key to set it to the laptop screen without an external monitor hooked up?
