Recently we suffered a Loss of a Forum Favorite the original
A Little Joke on a Regular Day. (No Link since it’s just a dead end )
The Thread was quite large and had been active for 5 years and then one day it was gone. This has rightfully upset a lot of those users who enjoyed that thread. We had a couple of other Threads that we sparked New Editions of ending in [2025] as to not loose those Original threads. I would like to request in the Spirit of the Forum that we all keep those threads on topic and keep the chit chat to private messages or a new Thread.
I’m not really sure how you keep a chit chatty topic on track
I think going with what we have now (a yearly rotation) would probably preserve such valued threads through software limitations.
Also (just to say), that if we REALLY wanted the thread back, someone with SQL experience could go in there and query out the replies and reduce the number (deleting) of replies that do not meet the critiera of are ‘necessary’ and ‘on track’ to make it viable again. No, it wouldn’t be that much fun, but it could be done in fairly short order if the # of replies is just over the maximum.
We can’t it will be a self discipline I never cared before we lost one of my Favorite Threads and Now I am just doing my best to keep mindful that there is a limit. Yeah it may be a large one but its a limit none the less and I rather keep the thread viewable for all unlike what we get now with the old one.
Well as I said, it could be fixed here and then locked (to prevent further issues). I’d be happy (as a low priority, which would probably mean a week or so, because I have company coming this weekend) to (if allowed) clone or download the forum database and do surgery on the thread on my own machine, then provide a set of SQL statement to run against the database on the forum server. It’s an offer on the table.
Please note, that I have no experience with Discourse, so I would probably have to try to setup a duplicate server on my machine to make sure that what I do doesn’t break some structure, though probably wouldn’t.
Those kind of threads are normally under Lounge > EndeavourOS pub and pubs are well pubs. Hard to keep chit chat at bay.
Apparently the admins either weren’t aware of the size limit to the threads. Now that they are, maybe they can keep an eye on them and lock them before they are plunged into the cyberspace blackhole.
