HDMI Sound Has no Output

@bescott9944 I just think it’s a hardware thing and it may be able to be resolved with a change somewhere in one of the configurations but is it worth the headache. It’s just easier to get a card that works and done. But if I had the hardware in front of me? I might try more. :thinking: Maybe?

@bescott9944 I found some more info on hdmi. Read the section on HDMI it talks about resetting the tv and having sound playing while connecting the HDMI cable.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture/Troubleshooting#No_output

@ricklinux Lol So now we’re not giving up yet… :slightly_smiling_face:
I will give it a look and see. I followed the instructions @joekamprad provided and not a change there either…
I will give it a look and let ya know…
LLAP

Have you looked at the following commands?

pacmd list-cards

Then look at this one which is very important because i think the problem is with one of the sinks maybe configured improperly. I’m guessing here?

pacmd list-sinks

There is also another version of this sinks command

pactl list sinks

list playback devices

aplay -l

The answer lies somewhere in the depths of the configuration. :face_with_raised_eyebrow::thinking:
Reading the Arch wiki makes my head spin. There is so much information on this.

@ricklinux

I looked that this and tried what it said, did not see anything… Lol
Here is the output of the commands…

First there was files but no access, so I used SUDO and then went to checked the folders and there are no such files as the SUDO command shows…

What is interesting to me is that it seems to see the hardware but something is preventing it from functioning even though you can get sound out of it.

@ricklinux

Yes I know what ya mean, my head is spinning too… Lol

Yes I agree, but the question is obvious, WHERE? … :smile:
I tried all of the commands and here is all of there output… In the order that you have them…

Nothing jumped out at me but some of it is above my paygrade… Lol

@ricklinux

I know it is baffling to me too… I have 3 of these boards, I have hooked this HDD to them, I do have Manjaro OS on a HDD on one of the same boards and there is the same issue…
But boot from a Mint 18.3, Peppermint 10, or a MX-18 live USB and the HDMI sound works after booting from the USB. I had a issue with Mint 19.2 and MX-19, but the MX forum said to go back to the 4.14 kernel and the sound started to work on the installed MX-19 OS on a HDD on the same boards.
That is why I thought it could be a kernel issue … Lol
LLAP

The active profile is OFF. The one you want is the hdmi-stereo. Somewhere in some configuration there needs to be a change. I just don’t know where as i am not an Arch hardware sound expert. The hardware is there and it is recognized and the video works it’s just the sound and you know it works in other distributions.
Have you tried the lts kernel?

@bescott9944 Give me a little time as i am going to compare these commands to mine. One thing i already notice and i said before is the pacctl list sinks shows headphones as the active port right at the bottom. Mine shows analog line out with headphones not available because i don’t have any plugged in. I’m wondering if you go back to sudo alsamixer and turn off headphones as i noticed that was active.

On the First install I used the LTS kernel and you said that I should use the 5.3 kernel so I reinstalled the OS with the default kernel…

@ricklinux
I went to the Alsamixer and turned down the Headphone with the up & down arrow keys…
I found out that If I hit my [Tab Key] another screen pops up. Here is the output of that Alsamixer screen on EndeavourOS and the 2nd one is from my Mint 18.3 Install (this computer). The Mint has [Digital] and EndeavourOS does not…

@ricklinux

That is interesting and proves that it is a settings issue somewhere in a script that is not writing the config file or osprobe is not working… Hmmmm…
Yours starts out with the HDMI and mine does not… Hmmm…

I am not a sound person either other than playing music. So you are getting this more than I am…
Thanks…

@ricklinux

Don’t have anything plugged in… Hmmmm…

Well, you can have the latest kernels and still keep the lts kernel. You just install it and it adds another entry in grub. It will update as well as the current kernels do when there is an update. But if you already had it before and it didn’t work there isn’t any point in trying it.

im jurius does it shows error on suspended sinks in journalctl -b ?

@bescott9944 Could you run journalctl -b and post it as @ringo asks to see if there are errors with suspended sinks. I also wonder about dmesg if there is something.

Ok @ricklinux and @ringo here are the two logs… BTW if you want me to re-install the OS that is not a problem either… I will have to do this in 2 posts over posting limits…

Here is “Dmesg Part 1”…
