Getting audio to work over HDMI

I know there’s this other thread, but I don’t want to be rude and take over OP’s problem.

I’m also trying to make audio over HDMI to work on my laptop.

As recommended, I tried turning off internal audio devices via pavucontrol.


But it seems that HDMI Audio is supposed to be channeled via my internal audio device as you can see in my next screenshot, where HDMI channels are reporting ‘unplugged’. And indeed, if I play some audio through these, my TV doesn’t play any audio.

Selecting Pro Audio as the audio profile and playing through any channels ends up with the same result.

Any tips on what I can try?

It just ‘works’ for me. No idea why or why not. I was actually surprised when I did a reinstall and sound started coming out of my monitor (vs my speakers) by default.

I also tried setting snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=3 or 1 in my kernel params as is mentioned in the framework laptop forums (I don’t have a framework laptop)

I also unplugged everything besides the HDMI cable.

No success. The HDMI audio channels stay ‘unplugged’.

I tried this but it doesn’t work. It’s the same problem. Thanks anyway.

I just booted the live install medium of linux mint and then it does work! However, I think it has to do with the nvidia driver. During the live system, I’m on the nouveau driver, but on EOS I’m on nvidia-dkms.
