Deepin 20 Arrived

I was made aware of the privacy policy by @Rafael-uy, one of the Reborn developers and they have a dedicated thread on this on their own forum.

I do understand the fear surrounding Deepin’s privacy policy but the way I read them and understand them, the policy concerns the Deepin distro and not the DE.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, the Arch-based Deepin DE is using the Arch repo by default, so updates and app packages are coming from the Arch repo and not from the Debian based Deepin software repo. Arch does not have any ties to the Chinese mother company of Deepin.

This is a sensitive issue that divides the communities opinions and, as always, we do respect anyone’s opinion over here, just keep it on a civilized level.

I also received messages that we should drop Deepin for their Privacy Policy, but since we don’t ship Deepin by default but as a choice, we’re keeping it. For those who are concerned about their privacy and are not convinced by the Arch Deepin argument, there are other DEs to choose from.
The only reason we’re going to drop Deepin, and this we monitor seriously, is the performance. If the Deepin devs keep sending Arch continuously beta, read unstable, versions, we will drop it.

Thanks for clearing things out!

That’s why I was wondering about what’s in the repos - about that particular daemon (deepin-user-experience-daemon) - and whether we can find source code for it. Otherwise I have no reason to worry about it. I doubt they would come over here to enforce any EULA violations, especially as I haven’t even seen a EULA yet. OTOH - I dumped Windows for EULA foolishness in the first place - the product wasn’t all THAT bad always…

felixonmars just reported on github that the packaging is being changed to use deepin-kwin instead of deepin-mutter so that problem should be solved shortly.

It still didn’t work for me on vbox. Anyway i installed it on bare metal to see. How do i fix htop which won’t launch.

It’s the file browser that is locking up now. In vbox everything locks up. Here i can move outside the file browser window and is working but inside no.

It doesn’t work here either. I would guess deepin support for Terminal=true is not working. Of course, you can always open a terminal and type htop or change the desktop entry to not use Terminal=true

edit: I just looked at the logs. It is trying to launch gnome-terminal

If I could jump in…I’m a new user and I’ve been struggling with this. I had Deepin installed, then started facing problems with the dock not loading (being discussed in the DDE area) and decided to switch to XFCE (had to re-install but that’s another story). Now up and running with that, I’d still like to have Deepin available…so I’ve installed that via the terminal…

But I still can’t find the way to switch between the two DEs. If this was an Ubuntu OS, I’d be logging out and making the switch via an icon next to my name at log-in. For EndeavourOS, I see Change Display Manager in the Welcome screen and I’ve opened Select Display Manager (while in XFCE) but all I see there are the 4 choices (gdm/lightdm/lxdm/sddm). I do not see sessions that you say can be selected.

Hello @DPool
A display manager is not a desktop. In order to have another desktop you have to install one.

https://endeavouros.com/docs/pacman/how-to-install-desktop-environments-offline-install-users/

That is where you select the session. You just have to know where the button to select your session is:

It is probably too high resolution of a screenshot, but see the arrows in the upper right.

I guess I was not clear when I said “I’d still like to have Deepin available…so I’ve installed that via the terminal.”

So, yes, having watched the entire process unfold before my eyes (with no signs of errors), I have reason to believe I’ve installed Deepin. Making it available to switch to…if I knew how to switch to it.

(Added) And I have consulted the page you provided many times today (which is not to say that I couldn’t have missed something or done something incorrectly)…but I have at least attempted to RTFM.

Question: Did you read the post directly above yours with the big screenshot?

I think you posted that at about the time I posted my follow-up…so, no, I did not see that one. Thanks for showing me where the button is…somehow I was in a zone thinking the button was contained in the login box. I bow in your direction!

Sorry if i misunderstood you. If you have already installed another desktop you just switch to it before logging in. Top right corner as @dalto has pointed out.

Yup, got it (how much more hidden could that dang thing have been?)…and it even works! Only…because of today’s developments, there is still no panel and dock. But at least now I can keep an eye on it for fixes while not having to depend on it as my one and only DE. Thanks!

I have had Deepin installed a number of different times. The first version 15 worked well. This new version 20 is not my favorite. I have had issues getting it to work on my hardware and now the Dock isn’t loading. I had given up on it for now as i use xfce, cinnamon and plasma.

Yup, exactly what I’m doing and for the same reason. I chose xfce because of its “native” status with EndeavourOS but I actually prefer KDE (and have it with Manjaro and Kubuntu in installs on other laptops).

I know that the right-side control panel of Deepin 15 was widely criticized (Tom of Switched to Linux said that it was initially very cool but in day-to-day use very annoying) but I had no problem with it and actually enjoyed something unique when so many DEs are just slight variations on the same basic idea. (I’m aware of Budgie…and used it briefly with Ubuntu…but when I saw that the Raven panel contained only a calendar and some audio controls, I thought…“Really? That’s it?”)

I have DDE Ubuntu installed in virtualbox and i like it. It is a remix & i do get some errors popping up but i submit them so hopefully somethings get fixed.

someone using deepin and can tell something on close to tray is working or not? may there is a package needed or something i can not find any setting to this…

I try to reproduce this and i see that qbittorrent disappear if you close it to tray…

I can confirm the same thing you are seeing. Anything that is minimized to the tray on deepin just disappears.

My experience with Deepin on EndeavourOS is that on my AMD RX590 i have to set the window effect on right away or the system will freeze the whole computer. Once set it works fine and i am currently running it on virtualbox. Htop still doesn’t work unless you run it from the terminal. Still haven’t figured out how to fix that. The only other issue is qbittorrent doesn’t show minimized in the tray. Not sure where it is if it’s there?

All minimized apps are there and do not dissappear as shown.

Edit: I can also report that any apps that come preinstalled on deepin only minimize once and then if you open them again and try to minimize them you have to click on the docked icon in order to minimize them. The minimize (-) icon doesn’t do anything after the first time. So subsequent attempts you have to click on the docked icon. Any apps that i have installed after on my own i can minimize and open multiple times with no issue. I have tried every single app that comes installed and that’s the way it’s working on my system.
