Best DE for my needs?

Haha, perfect. I’ve never tried Deepin on any distro. It just looks really clean. Not worth it if it’s buggy though.

I absolutely love it.
v15.9 prior to v20 was just brilliant in terms of looks, but regardless of how i loved it - it’s impossible to fix

I might actually give KDE another go…I like all the customization you have…I just kept breaking things when I tried using it before. Haha. Anyone know a good guide on using KDE?

Yes…ask here

A guide? No. Just timeshift yourself a backup and then restore when things go bad. KDE is definitely for the person who wants to customize.

Yes, but it’s only in german, you must take a translater for it:

If you don’t like KDE, that just means you haven’t customised it to your liking… yet.

You don’t need a guide for KDE. Just tinker with it. However, as suggested above, it’s a good idea to have a timeshift snapshot on hand, since that makes it easy to undo any unwanted consequences of tinkering. Just make sure to include your dotfiles in the snapshot, as by default they are not included…

I’m afraid of suggesting Gnome because I risk getting hung drawn and quartered.

I use most DE but XFCE is my go to everyday OS. Now for you, you will be the only one who can decide that.

For my normal toss around and travel laptop I normally run XFCE with zentile, so when I want my tiling windows, I can just tile that one workspace and enjoy it, and everything else is the same.

Or I use XFCE with i3. I keep going back and forth between the two. But zentile is a very simple thing to use and sort of get that tiling feel without actually a tiling wm.

Also, you can try kde with the auto tiling app from the AUR. It’s not really a WM, same as zentiie, but you can at least get a taste for it.

After distro hopping, one shifts to desktop hopping  You can bang any desktop environment into pretty much whatever shape suits you–it just depends on how much work and time you want to put into it. Where I find the differences are the little things, and those can only really show themselves over time with use. Plasma has excellent fine tuning for power savings features, for instance, but that matters more for a laptop than desktop.

I agree as I’m on a desktop and i am tending to desktop hop now mostly on EndeavourOS. I use Kde, Xfce & Cinnamon. Triple boot currently with Btrfs setup. One is encrypted. Also using rEFInd to boot between them.

I’ve currently got cinnamon on my Endeavour laptop and love it, it’s nice and clean with numerous widgets so didn’t require too much customisation to get it to my liking. But, I have had connection/Internet issues with it recently. So will be reinstalling it tomorrow with Budgie. Used Budgie on my Solus install and absolutely loved it.

Cinnamon has plenty of theming options and applets+desklets. Have a look at Cinnamon spices, it says they are for mint but work fine on cinnamon. Loads of themes etc on there

There just enough to allow you to make it feel like your own. But, the lack of options makes it that much more stable. I run Arch Cinnamon on my home computer that I pay bills on and get work done on it. There’s is less distractions because there’s nothing left to configure, and even though it’s running Arch, I’ve literally never ever broken anything since install. I update monthly. Is the backup computer that saves me when I get burnt playing around with all the other DEs on my fun computer.

Every DE has its place and purpose. Except deepin. I can’t figure that one out for the life of me.

every DE Fits someone
i am using lxqt with cairo-dock currently but can always change, i just like how the desktop works, but sometimes desktop hopping can be a key of preferences.
