Has anyone ever used Plasmatube? How does it work, or is it being discontinued?
Seems to be worked on if you look at the commit history. Never heard of it, but if you look at the description it says “YouTube video player based on mpv, yt-dlp, and Invidious.”
I have it on my computer. First impressions are good. But I can get YouTube videos to play.
Well these days that’s a win ![]()

Ah, thank you. I’m very happy to be here and the color purple has a positive impact.
I have the feeling that PlasmaTube isn’t fully developed. https://discuss.kde.org/t/plasmatube-how-to-search-for-a-video/19219
Hmm. That would be great. What do you use for YouTube?
I use FreeTube (pure YouTube), GrayJay (YouTube, Rumble, Odysee, Bitchute and others) and yt-dlp (to download content from various streaming services).
Which I use depends on need, and often enough, which ever one happens to be working today with YouTube ![]()
Depending on which youtube player alternative you choose, be prepared for “downtime” when YouTube decides to change things on their part which breaks, at least temporarily these apps (but who knows for how long and what the future holds) .
I cannot talk to GrayJay as I don’t use it. I have tried it a short while but it doesn’t match my use case of only watching YouTube videos. I tried it both on Linux and Android. The android app was among the “most feature rich” for not saying “bloated” I have had on my phone with an enormous size. The Linux one as well, to my test. I like normally apps with minimal but not simplistic UI which does one (or just a few things) and do it (them) well.
At any case, whatever you will choose which matches your use case, equip yourself with some patience and frustration management. Because YouTube.
Search for FreeTube on the forum and you will get an idea. Here is one recent:
Just my two Yuans.
Oh, now it’s clear why external YouTube open source is always such a problem! Good to know.
Tutorials on Arch, Linux, and general documentation. e.g., YouTube explanations of EndeavourOS
A fully developed program/app is an interesting concept, though I am not sure it is the right term to use. I don t know. Maybe I am just being anal, but I can not think of one fully developed program/app, considering the constant updating going on. I agree that a program can be mature, and maybe full featured, but then again, updating…
I use SmartTube(it’s Android only) sometimes on my TV box otherwise i just use Firefox with uBlock Origin and have no issues.

Ahh, that’s your resume! I think I’ll stick with Firefox for now, as I watch the videos occasionally; maybe that’s enough. Chromium, you can create a desktop window there.
OK…
Well I did wrote “Firefox with uBlock Origin”
But sure…and it does work the best.
Wait you mean the link? That’s the GitHub of the SmartTube Dev, I don’t know why it shows that way?
Edit: aaa here is his normal site:
I updated with link above.
Yeah, like I said I use it on my TVBox(which is android based).
It works great and gets updated often(with built in updater)
It can block ads and even sponsorships(but I do live does on)
I suspect many here (myself included), would prefer to minimise, as best we’re able, being tracked by entities such as Google. If you’re personally ok with that though, then this is a solution that’ll no doubt work well for you.
Yes I agree! I would never use any Chromium based browser.
Just for clarity, my point wasn’t with regards to the browser. Being signed in to YouTube will invoke tracking, regardless of the browser.
But, I respect your preference @SCORPION2000 ![]()
Ahh, I hadn’t thought of it that way, ok.
I learned something new, too. It’s a shame Firefox doesn’t have something like that. Or does it?
Humm…never tried that but sure it probably works.
