It’s not my place to tell you what you should and shouldn’t do, but…
M$ could easily have fought it. They just don’t care.
I personally find that 99% of the WWW is unusable without a full-fledged and aggressive adblocker I do create exceptions for sites which I like.
I don’t. nobody
gets on my ad blocker whitelist. No exceptions. If my own mother had a Google AdSense account, I would still block all ads from her site.
Not blocking ads because you like someone does more harm than good. It just feeds the system. If I really like someone’s work, I will rather donate a few dollars to them, than make them $0.10 by watching the ad.
Likewise Here
I very much prefer “opening up” a little as long as the ads are non-intrusive than go through all the hassle of donations, especially when it involves PayPal or the likes.
To be clear, with “ads” I mean static images coming from the same domain as the actual site.
Foreign ads are of course blocked.
Well, most ad blockers let these pass anyway. Most of the time, I won’t bother blocking those by creating custom rules.
Also, if donating is a hassle, I won’t do it. It’s up to the recipient of the donation to make it easy for me to donate.
Yeah, I mean there are ads that are simply images and are harmless.
They are often nothing more than the logo of a sponsor, IMO this is completely fine.
Most ad bockers also block locally hosted ad solutions.
Yeah, I have no problem with people shilling for companies that sponsor them, as long as they are transparent about it. I’m perfectly fine with sponsorships.
Good, they absolutely should do so!
@torvic9 and I were talking about static images of logos of sponsors, those will typically not get blocked because they are no different that any other static image on the site.
I should have been more precise in my previous post…
the takedown didn’t happen because youtube-dl was violating the TOS in its concept, but because it contained direct links to copyrighted materials hardcoded in its source code. A simple and stupid mistake by the testers, who added 3 hardcoded strings containing links to youtube clips (which were infringing DMCA), for testing purposes.
I think the problem was probably detected by automated crawlers searching the web for copyrighted materials and the repos was most likely automatically flagged.
I think the repo could be up and running again if it removed those links.
Indeed a bit stupid. Maybe they should have hashed the links or simply base64-encoded it. Or no links at all
But it doesn’t make the reaction of the content mafia any better.
No, they shouldn’t. They should encourage responsible, privacy respecting, local ads.
Likewise I block ads on the Internet. I don’t watch TV except for YouTubes vids on a USB stick. I don’t listen to the radio or streaming services; I listen to ogg music stored on a SIM-less phone. I haven’t heard or seen an ad in years and I am offended when I do. Who are these morons that ads are directed to? Has the IQ of the population really dropped 20 points in the last 10 years?
You go beyond what I do! I DO watch some sports on TV (often PVR’ed for ad-skipping) but otherwise don’t hit ads too often. I don’t think the IQ has really dropped (it didn’t have all that far to go!) - but I guess than analytics have determined that ads aimed higher are less effective on a cost/benefit basis
In other words - too many smart people aren’t watching them!
Ads are not exactly a 21st century feature
I only have a TV to watch sports - and to provide some background noise.
German public TV doesn’t have ads after 8pm, but you have to pay a fee, even if you don’t watch any of their channels. But that’s a different issue
“People are getting dumber. That’s not a judgment; it’s a global fact. In a host of leading nations, IQ scores have started to decline.”

As far as I know, in Germany the ads are PART of the sports - so they don’t need to run any as well… At least, most of the football teams I’ve seen appear to have corporate logos on their uniforms…
Over here we just fill the rest of the stadium (hockey boards, etc) with static ads - or even sidelines on the fields with video… and then add in ads to the TV coverage! Can’t avoid them completely, no matter where.
Apply directly to the forehead.
… or so I’ve heard.
