XFCE is super slow 70% of the time i log in

So i have an XFCE install on my mini pc (Nucbox g2) and for some reason about 70% of the time i log into it now it is just painfully slow. Opening a browser takes 2 minutes switching worspaces takes about 45 seconds etc. Sometimes if i just let it sit for 10 minutes it goes away other times it doesn’t i know its not sessions i set that stupid folder to read only but to me it seems like it just isnt governing the cpu properly. I have everything set to performance mode but while it’s being slow my cpu is at 0% and my ram usage is at 900mb the only trick I’ve found is when i boot up if i go into my bios and exit then the fans spin up and it logs in like normal. I will say this problem developed after not updating for a few months because i was out of town and this install is about 2 years old so i was just curious is there a way to fix this or should i just do a fresh install? I’m a little baffled by this because on my super old am2 pc i have a mint xfce install that is from 2015 and it doesn’t do this despite not having been updated for over a decade and that’s on a hdd.

My first thought is, what if it’s not being adequately cooled, and the CPU is throttling down as a result?

Your example of entering the BIOS, “then the fans spin up and it logs in like normal” seems to suggest that when it is cooling, it is working, unless I’ve misunderstood your account there.

You might try playing with the cooling options in the BIOS and try cranking them.

NUC’s are very simple systems. For comparison, the Intel N100 (2023) in the NucBox G2 is slower than the Ryzen 3 1200 (2017).

I don’t think it’s a cooling problem the fans spin up if the cpu gets load but for some reason the OS isn’t utilizing the cpu so they are on low or off. I’ve tried giving it a bunch of tasks to make the cpu usage rise and that does nothing it still sits at 0-2% and takes forever to do anything. If the OS acts normal the cpu loads up like normal and the fans spin up like normal. Entering the bios seems to load the cpu enough and then the OS starts utilizing the cpu. I’ve had this system for 2 years and installed xfce the day i got it. It has always been snappy and fast up until about a month or so ago and i haven’t touched anything in the bios that’s why I’m curious if this install is just junk now or if there was some xfce update that messed up a setting I’m unaware of.

In the BIOS, can you override the cooling profile and crank it?

The issue I’m hoping to isolate, is a cooling one. If cooling isn’t functioning as it should, rather than the fans spinning up under load, the CPU instead throttles down to compensate for the heat generation. The result is a slow system, with quiet fans, as you’ve described.

This isn’t a cooling issue though when the cpu does get load the fans spin up like normal and when i boot the windows partition it acts normal the problem seems to be xfce just not using the cpu most of the time when i log in. This has to do with something xfce is doing when it boots it has nothing to do with the cpu or cooling system if i crank the fans the system still acts the same just has the fans at 100%.

That’s good, that’s clarifying :+1:

Perhaps try running htop, and see what’s running, and what might be consuming resources (if anything).

Could you also please share the output of this, to give us a bit of a picture of your system:

inxi -Fxxc0z

If this is a new install, you might check to see if it is set up to index discs. That keeps the system busy for a while, until it finishes.

If you can afford (https://etcher.balena.io > ISO (4GB) > USB stick), make a LIVE USB and see, whether an updated EOS behaves the same way without touching your installed system.

Htop doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary and runing inxi -Fxxc0z outputs this

Install is 2 years old never heard of index discs

If you ar ereffering to how the live disc behaves it’s fine if you are saying to install another instance of xfce i don’t have room for it so if that is the case i may as well format this partition and just reinstall

If you’re testing of the Live ISO was after this issue began, and you can confirm it’s fine, that’s worth noting.

Have you tried using the non-LTS kernel, to confirm whether the issue persists there too, as it might relate to a kernel update?

This will provide an overview of your drive’s SMART health status:

sudo smartctl -x /dev/sda

It’s difficult to tell you what to look for here, as different drives will report different things, so you might share the results.

As far as i am aware it doesn’t seem to be a kernal issue. Typically i stick with LTS becuase i don’t need to be on the bleeding egde and as far as i know LTS typically tends to be more stable and have less bugs/breakages. This problem started when i was on 6.12 and i thought maybe updating to 6.18 would fix the issue but so far it hasn’t, it seems to be happening less frequently since i updated it but that could just be a placebo. I’m also not sure how to switch to the non LTS kernal and i don’t know if i would want to i think if it’s at the point where i would have to do that i may as wel just do a fresh install and see if the problem goes away. My Eandeavour i3 setup i just did on my desktop is on 6.18 and it doesn’t seem to be having issues it does take about 45 seconds to load stuff when i log in but that’s just the difference between i3 and xfce i suppose.

This could indicate a disc problem.

I would use memtest to be sure the ram is good or use a new/other ssd

I’m aware i don’t care for kde
