Which privacy browser?

I never thought of trying a de-googled chromium. I’d love to test the waters of other browsers for sure! I saw something about waterfox but never looked into it.

What do you think and know about Waterfox?
There are 3 versions of it and updates come regularly.
The subject of 64 bit is superfluous, and that’s not the point.

Waterfox was bought by System1 which is an advertising company (they bought Startpage as well previously). What that entails for the browser in terms of privacy, I am afraid I couldn’t tell. I haven’t been following the evolution of the browser nor have I dug into the matter any further. Just sharing the info

There is also this blogpost by the creator of Waterfox explaining the issue of the “take-over”:

You better try something like LibreWolf it’s Firefox based, maximum hardcore privacy oriented out of the box (apart from TOR) but still usable, unlike something like GNU IceCat.

Oh, and devs explicitly said that if there will be anything censorship related inside the code (apart from propaganda on FF site sometimes) - it will be removed from LibreWolf.

Other then Firefox, LibreWolf, Un-Googled Chromium what is there that good?

I’ve been using LibreWolf as my go to, with Firefox as a “backup”.

I’d still name a GNU IceCat, but you know…It’s not walk in the park for normal people

I’ve seen you write a lot on LibreWolf GitLab. Do you know if there is something wrong with LibreWolf to Windows?

I tested librewolf-88.0.en-US.win64.zip but it didn’t start for me. It’s like a portable if I understand it correctly? Or do you need something under Windows?

Has anyone looked at the configs for Firefox from Librefox?

Sorry, no idea since i don’t use and never will use Windows.
You need to ask @stanzabird_gitlab (i believe he’s involved with Windows version) in chat, or create issue in GitLab…

But in theory it should be set and run experience, although Windows version is very young :upside_down_face:

There is also Firedragon, which is a Librewolf fork - with some additions. In the AUR - or in chaotic-aur - for those thusly inclined. I use that when I care(!) - and Brave otherwise, because it is ‘good enough’ out-of-the-box for most low-impact uses (like coming here!). They all seem to “shoot themselves in the foot” sometimes - but that doesn’t affect the code much…

This project is an independent fork of Firefox, with the primary goals of privacy security and user freedom. It is the community run successor to LibreFox

So it makes sense to follow LibreWolf now i guess, LibreFox seems to be abandoned for quite some time now :pensive:

I run several OS at home.

I’ll have to take a look at it a little better.

You are right. The latest release is from Dec. 2018!
I missed that somehow

I hadn’t realised there were so many forks of Firefox before reading this thread.

Aside from the BAT crap, what’s the issues atm with Brave?

I use it on my Win10 Work laptop, and have no issues with it. I still use Firefox at home in EnOS and Pop!_OS.

Okay that’s weird.
I ran three tests with no changes 3 minutes apart.

First test: 98% protected,
Second test 75% protected(!)
Final test 64% protected(!!)

I got more red bars per test. Something’s off.

Edit: and now up to 94% protected.

ATM - i have found none with the browser - however there is evidence of mistakes by the company (apparently rectified, but who knows). OOB, the privacy settings are better than most - and if they are playing games in the background, they aren’t affecting me yet! That said - I don’t do my banking on it

My big issue with Brave is the politics behind it’s founder and also that it seems to more and more become a pusher for virtual currencies; when it started it was just one small ad, now the front page is full of ads for crypt-currencies.

(Edit: interesting that ad algorithms assumes that because I am into Linux and / or gaming I am a prime target for Dogecoin ads; if I use another computer without adblockers youtube is FULL of ads for dogecoin and other crypto currencies atm.
