Which music player do you run under Linux?

I still use Audacious, nice and simple and does what I need it to do

Same, I have had some minor problems with it from time to time though. On the phone I use an app called phocid.

On my phone I use Poweramp, bought it years ago and really like it, has some great equaliser settings and they still update and support til this day, supports a lot of file types and has a lot of options to do just about anything you can think of, sort of the oppiste of audacious now I think about it, I think that may be that I use a lot of different speakers with my phone. I think the only other apps I got where some of the dragon age games.

I’m looking for a Linux CD audio player. I currently use Audacious and it does work but I would love something that only plays CDs a bit like the Creative CD software of old.

Or the Windows 9x CD player.

Any reason for this? Just curious

I just love the simplicity of it and I’ve started buying CDs again. I’m considering buying a mini HiFi but I hate that I’m spending money on all the BT and DAB crud that I will never use. Audacious works, it’s just a funny thing that is always on my mind.

Yer cool as

A trick i like to use when looking for something specific is to use yay to search for it.

yay cd player

For instance, gives me:

and based onthat, at a glance your potential options are goobox, adcd, grip and mcdp

I cast the widest net possible as well. I want to see everything.

That said, I hate the lot of them. Especially Audacious, Deadbeef and about 11 more…

My only criteria: on shuffle/random i don’t want to hear duplicates 15 minutes into an 800-song playlist. Let alone several an hour, 2 hours, 3 hours.

Most music players suck badly for my single, simple need. I have been auditioning every player ever made (mostly) for one year now, straight. I know of what I speak.

The only two I have now are:

Quod Libet: 3-4 hours til first repeat track

Tauon: roughly the same.

All others: not even close

Ergo, I only use Tauon or Quod Libet lately.

Hmm, I think shuffle in mpv just randomizes the order of items in the playlist (I thought that was the normal way to shuffle, it’s what makes sense), so you would only hear a duplicate once you’ve gone through all the songs once then it would play them back in the same order.

It’s not exactly a music player, but nothing stops you from using it as one. And if this is not good enough for you it’s easy to use lua scripting to make it behave the way you do want.

I switched to Fooyin a while back. It is my current favorite music player. It is great if you have a large local collection.

DeaDBeef and Strawberry.

in my dreams. very very very very opposite in (my) real life

I said two of them suited me like Goldilocks and I am sticking with them and I’m not better than any piece of software, save ClamTK or something

…but I talked to a guy once who did write a script to guarantee no duplicates…above my pay grade but good to know its out there.

That implies it’s truly random. Apple changed it’s shuffle algorithm so it was less random while seeming more so.

I still like DeaDBeeF, but for local music, I’m using Fooyin. For streaming Apple Music, I’m using Cider.

Strawberry to play local Flac library
Deezer to discover and stream music
(And Musicolet to play flacs on Android)

Still using Strawberry, very well doing random play.

I also use Deadbeef, which is very similar to my beloved Foobar2000. I often listen to opera, almost always in FLAC or APE format. The multiple tracks are linked together. There must be no space or gap between them, or the magic is completely ruined. Deadbeef does it perfectly.

I recently found Quod Libet and have been using it alot. Although I haven’t tried or used the shuffle, it really suits my needs for my local MP3 collection. Lightweight and just the right amount of features. Audacious is my other go-to. I like simplistic, so the likes of Strawberry have never appealed to me. Thanks for mentioning QL … I think its underrated.

Strawberry for library management, it’s battle tested, I know it doesn’t mess up my library and the file organizing feature is great.

Fooyin for local playback, it’s fast, feature rich and with the many layout options I can customize it to my liking.

99% of the time I listen through mpd on a headless raspi though.
