Which DE are you using?

I switched from Cinnamon to KDE, not regretting it.

For me, KDE Plasma. I started with Gnome many, many years ago, never did grow to love it. Switched to KDE 2 (never got to use KDE 1 that much), and have preferred KDE since then. I keep trying others, Cinnamon is tolerable, MATE is tolerable, LXQT would be nice if it were anywhere near complete. XFCE is awful IMO, as I can’t find a menu that doesn’t annoy me to use on it. Gnome I find to be the most frustrating thing in the world. It simply is a horrible design. It’s simple, but everything is done so that it prevents you from just being able to do anything easily. Uses the Win8 Metro style UI by default that’s hideous and very ungainly on a desktop. Most other DE’s that I’ve tried simply aren’t stable enough to even give a full try.

I used Gnome back in the day, but that changed when they combined a MacOS style with a mobile UI and locked down the most useful feature, the taskbar. To break the Gnome dev’s lock/hold over the taskbar you are forced to go to an external website and add apps via this cumbersome method, or via AUR. The maintainers of these apps usually do something to make them break, quite often, so that created this unstable atmosphere. It all just felt constrained. I was done with it all.

Once Plasma hit, that was a game changer. I love me some visual and Plasma, and its theming, is top notch, with blurs, transparencies …so, so much eye candy. Not to mention, Plasma is just about as lightweight as XFCE which is why I think it is neck-and-neck on this poll.

But is it as awesome as AwesomeWM ? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Because AwesomeWM is legen … wait for it … dary.

In case you haven’t guessed it already, I am using AwesomeWM. I find it more comfortable than i3 and like its customization options. It has also some neat features like the hotkey popup or how simple it is to create custom menus with awful.menu. I have to admit the configuration of i3 is simpler, especially for people with little or no experience in programming. However, this is exactly what makes Awesome so customizable.

I’ve read that somewhere before …

Like me
I hadn’t paid much attention to the question which DE you use.

Answer: i3wm
They did not ask for more details

Hey I know you

Plasma is really great, but I’ve heard that there are people waiting for KDE4.

No, I wait for KDE 6.1

You don’t like Plasma either?

No, on the contrary I like it a lot. I’d like to use it again too. But it’s just not stable enough for me (at least with the Distro with the green M). I haven’t tried a vanilla plasma yet.

Obviously, Plasma is not exactly the same as KDE.

sway, since the 1.0 version (March 2019). Previously: i3 and Openbox.

sway, together with Waybar and some stuff by me (autotiling, nwg-launchers, Azote) composes the environment comfortable enough for me to need no DE.

Yeah true. Those silly old fixed-release distros! People need to learn to roll.

Do you also think that Plasma and KDE are different?

A Venn Diagram of their respective letters finds zero overlap, just two neighbourly circles.

Thank you more than you may ever know for autotiling. That’s by FAR the best thing to happen to i3, since the creation of i3. It’s utterly fantastic! Thanks!

LOL, there is something about it  The original concept comes from olemartinorg. I only re-written the script to work both on i3 and sway.

Well, technically yes. Plasma is KDE’s desktop environment. KDE is the entire suite of applications that together make a usable computer (desktop, applications, etc). But I don’t know anyone who complains if you call KDE Plasma just KDE.

I’d be prepared to complain if you made me an offer too good to refuse.
