Like I said before, and re-parroted by pebcak, your install somehow must be incomplete, or corrupted.
I would uninstall gnome-software & Co.
Making sure these are installed:
extra/appstream 0.16.2-1 [installed]
extra/appstream-glib 0.8.2-2 [installed]
extra/archlinux-appstream-data 20230421-1 [installed]
Plus malcontent.
Okay… I uninstalled the gnome software and the packagekit files and now it is populated so you are right! It must have needed some update that hadn’t finished installing to make it work. The others are specifically for the gnome software store. I was wrong you are right … again! It’s all working now and set up so it doesn’t bug me. so much. The only thing i don’t like about Gnome is the movement of the panels when clicking on the activities panel. or other. I’m going to have to get used to some other way maybe the shortcuts?

I do have pamac installed for “window shopping” sometimes 
So now I have an acceptable Gnome install that i could easily use and like. I installed it on bare metal on one of my other drives.
Edit: It’s much nicer to use if you use the magic key instead of the mouse to click on activities.

You refer to when swiping on the touchpad? That’s the part of the idea of switching between workspaces.
It can be done by other means as well, like with shortcuts.
Look under Settings >> Keyboard >> View and customize shorcuts.
or put mouse icon over bar , then scroll wheel on mouse ( if like that type thing )

I’m a mouse user…verses touchpads. The panel movement is a bit annoying. I’m used to Windows opening and closing.

Does Gnome work well on Nvidia with Wayland and another monitor set up either mirroring or extended?
At the end of the day:
It happens with each release of GNOME 
I like what ever works properly in my mind.
