Well, because original was deleted unintentionally by our fine @moderators, I decided to put this one up.

80ies say hello ![]()
I put this in Tiramisu basically
First time trying it this week and Iām 43 lol. Liqeuers always passed me by or me by them. Drambuie is next on my list.
My whole life I wanted to have a Cognac Phase, or even a Drambuie Phase, but it never came to pass. I understand. Glad Iām not the only one with a list..
Youāve gotta try Cognac man. Iāve only had the cheap stuff but I really like Martell.
Dark Smoked lager from Sacred Profane Brewing (Biddeford, Maine USA).
I have had all sorts of beer varieties through the years, but this is my first sample of a dark lager. Iām generally not too fond of smoky flavors but I thought Iād give it a try. I mean, a name like Sacred Profane Brewing definitely appeals to me
.
Well, itās very, very good. Right up front it hits with big chocolate flavor and a bit of coffee. Some smokiness is present mainly on the finish, and kind of subtle. Not a hoppy beer. A very mild 4% alcohol. In a blind tasting I would think this is a Porter.
Good stuff
.

In a nutshell, āIām awesome! Just ask me!ā ![]()
As for what Iām drinking, thereās really only one sensible answer this time of day.

I was wondering what the hell a dark larger would taste like. Today I learned a stout and porter are the same thing. Would you agree with that in your neck of the woods? I got that from Wikipedia.
Iād say that the dividing line between the 2 is just the whim of the brewer.
Also, I worded my āIāve never had a dark lagerā statement poorly; I have had various Dunkels (which are a specific style of dark lager), and some of the dark Mexican brewsā¦what I meant was that I have never tried a ācraftā breweryās dark lager before. The mass-produced stuff can be quite tasty but I do have higher expectations for small craft breweries and their productsā¦though many do not live up to those higher expectations.
Speaking of stouts - hereās a stout that I just tried - Double Diamond dry stout from Oxbow Brewing (Newcastle, Maine USA).
I have tried a couple of Oxbow beers in the past and was disappointed; this one is much better, though I have a hard time understanding the ādry stoutā designation - itās got a fair amount of malty sweetness. While the flavor is full and robust, the mouthfeel comes across kind of watery for the style.
Itās decent but I wonāt buy it again.
Several of the breweries in England are struggling financially IMO because they have strayed from their ābread and butterā and overstretched; some do everything from lager to gin now. A lot of the breweries that are marketed as small independents have sold out to the big boys and kept their marketing but itās not looking good for beer in the UK.
Tonight Mathew I am once again being late to the party as I am drinking for the 2nd time ( first was last weekend) Tia Maria.
I care too much about the labels on all alcohol especially beer and wine. That would not stand out to me if I was buying. I need to stop judging by labels.
I learned decades ago to ignore the labels. Some of the most attractive labels contain mediocre productā¦and not infrequently they contain terrible product
.
As far as this dark beer threadā¦.I donāt think any dark lagers resemble porter/stout. Negra Modelo and Shiner Bock for example. Iāve had Dunkels (yummy).
As a lager/pilsener snob I donāt think much of American craft brewers. Fruit-laced Ale seems 95% of output and Lagers and Pilseners are never taken seriously by them. Iāve tasted them. I think macro/mass-produced brewers do a better lager than craft brewers. Thereās a place I stop by after work sometimes where I have a Carlsberg lager and itās supreme bitterness and character are growing on me. I canāt say that for smaller operator lagers. Forgettable.
Iāve had tons of craft lagers/pilseners..they seem like an afterthought to round out the menu. If Iām in an Ale mood I can craft all evening. Craft brewers have my back there. But still a lager snob
lost in a world of not lager
I agree. But the dark lager I posted earlier certainly does resemble a porter, so much so that I feel confident that I could serve it to anyone and they would think porter.
Personally I do not care much for lagers, and pilsners arenāt high on my list either, so in general I donāt bother trying them.
The double diamond? Understood.
Itās all good. The best lager I ever had in my life was called Broken Hill from AUS which stopped brewing 20 years ago. Best pils I ever had was a resurrection of the old desert southwest A1 brewery brand (from the ā60s) over 10 years ago. Then they went out of business. Craft beer MIA to me for that.
Aināt it funny what you remember as magnificent in an imbiberās journey?
It is a lot like Linux with the incredible amount of choices I must say. Cheers. ![]()
