I don’t want to point people anywhere in particular - but PIA seems to provide speeds that still exceed what I’m paying my supplier for - and they helped fund Wireguard devel - so I can hope the rest of what they say is true!
@zangoku I’m using free Proton VPN as well. Haven’t felt the need to use it much, but agree with Joris I didn’t have any problems with speed etc.
Not so big differences between free and pay at speed!
NL free:
NL paid:
SWE paid:
Of course I have better ping against Sweden and I get to share files
I really like Private Internet Access, they open-sourced all their apps, they use Wireguard, have DNS tracker blocking & have 2fa for account access on the website. Also, have upgraded their servers recently and have some really good security described in their blog post.
"The servers used in the new PIA NextGen VPN Network have been redesigned from the ground up by our developers to utilize better hardware components as well as better deployment and update defaults. One big difference is that our NextGen VPN servers use 10Gbps network cards instead of the previous 1Gbps network cards. These changes were made with the VPN experience of our customers in mind. We wanted to provide better speed, security, and privacy and now that we have these things, we want our customers to be able to take advantage of them.
PIA NextGen VPN servers use the latest packages in kernel and userspace on an encrypted operating system. Within the encrypted OS, all VPN services and other meta-services that are system critical are properly isolated and only deployed to memory using RAM Disks – which means that all sensitive information is lost as soon as the server loses power. We’ve also added additional man-in-the-middle (MITM) protections to the SSH connections our developers use to communicate with our VPN servers. We even take the step of blocking the USB port access on these NextGen VPN servers for added peace of mind."
None for me …also no facebook but unfortunately i use Google.
Edit: Not Google Chrome but Gmail. Using Firefox browser at least.
Usually you do not need a VPN. But there are times when you need one too.
I also have a hard time getting away from Google. I use YouTube a lot! There are not many options that are good. You have lbry.tv and a few to choose from. But nothing that beats Youtube unfortunately! We have to live with it!
Use a specific browser and sandbox it? Firefox and Firejail for instance, or use a virtualbox. Or both!
Yes, I have been accused of “tinhat foilery”.
I use several profiles in Firefox. A bit awkward but works!

maybe someone knows
are there others VPN with opensource apps?
I saw the clip on Odysee. What I’ve read my way to is that Mullvad and ProtonVPN are among the best. My opinion then!
maybe you can check also azirevpn
I do not use it, but seems very trustworthy
I will consider it in the future.
that why i use vps in Swedish for openvpn
couple of questions…
-
I’m in the United States, so should i go with a VPN in the US?
-
Will it slow my internet speed down?
I’m a total newbie as far as VPNs go lol.
Any VPN based in the USA is subject to law enforcement in that jurisdiction. Whether that matters is for you to decide. MOSTLY you shouldn’t have to hide from a repressive regime…
Does anyone here use https://mullvad.net/en/
I do. I like them a lot. I’m able to pull down around 500Mb/s from them with OpenVPN with my firewall box, am very much looking forward to when pfSense implements Wireguard in the kernel and seeing how much improvement I can get.
Hi @galvez_65 & @anon83136962, i use Mullvad BUT
the “client” works easily on Buster(Debian) & Fedora (32/33).
I was looking around to install on Arch looking distros but many buts !
I found no ways yet…
All i get is .deb or .rpm
I’m still wondering if there is a way to adapt the “client side”.
Best
F.
It’s in the AUR, so run yay -S mullvad-vpn-bin
and you’ll be good.
Another way exists if you fight through the Archwiki to learn it… .deb or .rpm files can be ‘repackaged’ for use by pacman. There even is a util called debtap that can do it ‘for you’ if you wish. The proverbial cat can still get skinned
