I have assured the bug people that I’m on their side. And I also assured the rhino people I’m on their side. But whose side am I really on?

Anyone ever wonder how well games could do physics in 2001?…

2001 Jiggle Physics

The answer is better than they can in 2026

The feminists didn’t get their claws into games yet, so normal physics were still allowed in them back then.

Had a quick look on Steam tonight and it’s got me wondering why I’ve spent so long perfecting my Amiga emulator setup and buying a Pentium3 machine for retro gaming. There seems to be so many retro inspired or old rejuvenated games on Steam.

You can’t even really call it rejuvenated, I mean it’s ‘rejuvenation’ was bundling it with nglide, which you’re better off not even using because it runs better when configured to use DX7 or OpenGL on both windows and linux

But as you can see it’s limited to 4:3 aspect ratio, you can run it at 16:9 or 16:10 but it’ll just be stretched if you do.

But also, because the game is basically in it’s original form, there’s a lot of potential issues you may run into.

I made a guide that covers hopefully all of that though, and recently updated it quite thoroughly.

Sorry to be little be bit of Debbie Downer here, but breasts don’t bounce like that on while breathing, especially if there are bra’s made of metal or any other kind.

But back to point, this game series has been completely out of my radar. Didn’t know it existed, but maybe give it a go at some point. :alien_monster:

Frontier - Elite II from 1993. Thanks dosbox. The graphics look a bit dated, but it’s as much fun as it ever was! It’s a better game than Elite Dangerous.

I just finished Star Trek: Resurgence. It was just OK.

The story and choice elements of the game were fine.

The gameplay elements were pretty rough. The gameplay elements were a mix of:

  • Quick time events. These were all very easy but they did add an element of interactivity to the game
  • Untimed key press events. For example, hold the right trigger and push the right stick left to open a panel. These were extremely pointless, occurred too often and only added friction and annoyance.
  • Sneaking sequences. There were only a couple of these. They were fine if you like old school sneaking sequences where you sneak around guards that follow a rigid pattern
  • Shooting sequences were you hold a semi-fixed behind cover and shoot. These probably would have been OK if they were shorter but it wasn’t interesting enough to be worthwhile given how long some of them were.

All in all, I think it would have been better game if they removed most of those elements.

The worst part though is that all the cutscenes are unskippable. One of the fun parts about games like these is that you can replay them to get different scenes or outcomes. However, without the ability to skip anything, even after your first playthough is complete, limits replayability.

Overall, I think you would need to really enjoy Star Trek for this to be worth playing.

I said normal physics, not realistic physics lol. That is not a good implementation of such physics, but my whole point was that there actually at least is one, even if it ain’t very good. Judging by appearance I think they actually did it the same way most games that contain it today still do it. They put bones in the boobs. It was one of the first games to do this at all, funny enough, I think the only other 3D games that had jiggles back then were asian fighting games, like soul edge and doa.

This is how the method in question has been improved since then hehe

But fun fact about the wizardry series, they are the true origin of the entire JRPG genre. You’ll also often see references to this series in other Japanese media, sir-tech is defunct and Wizardry 8 was the last game they ever made, but Japaense game developers are STILL making spin-offs of this series. They totally lost their minds over these games ever there to such a level that a whole new category of games was created from it  Final Fantasy and many other super popular japanese RPGs can have their roots traced to this series.

The latest one of these spinoffs I believe is this one:

Monster Train 2 (added wurmkin clan and new cards for free) + DLC with a new clan (the railforged), new game mode… at a very fair price. 12 clans in total! Great game, very enjoyable.

And in just a few days, on 5 March, the eagerly awaited Slay the Spire 2 arrives. We’ll see how it goes!

I like the first one of this, is this worth getting if I have it?

Sure, MT2 is in my opinion a lot better than MT1.

Not only because of the six extra clans, which are all uniquely designed and very inspired, but also because of new elements such as equipment and room cards, as well as new cards for all clans. And because, in general, it is much more focused on playing with more units than the first one, and filling more floors with them. The initial turn to position units (deployment phase) is a great idea. The gameplay feels fresher and more satisfying than the first game. And of course, if in the first game you had 6x5x2=60 total combinations (main clan + secondary clan + hero choice, not counting the initial card chosen for the secondary clan), in this one you have 12x11x2=264. Discovering synergies and devising a strategy that works on the fly is very interesting. And it can be done in many different ways, leaving plenty of room for imagination and creativity. I’ve played games doing things I could never have imagined, but which come up as I go along, and it’s really interesting.

I bought a 5:4 monitor for retro games. There’s tiny black bars at the top and bottom but much better than stretching to 16:9 and should last longer than a second hand 4:3 screen.

God damn. That is a whole lot of work you put into that guide. I’ve only ever used nglide with Carmageddon from GOG. I didn’t like it in 3dfx mode tbh, it lost some of its low res charm.

Such a shame they never fixed the jawa’s on Koboh

i think it officially did support 5:4, in that case you might want to set it to 1280x1024 resolution. My guide covers likely supported 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions. 1280×1024 was the only one listed though, I couldn’t get it to launch with larger ones, but maybe you’d have better luck (I wasn’t overly motivated to pursue 5:4 resolutions)

nglide or at least glide2x which wiz8 has is limited to 16 bit depth, so using it causes banding in the skybox and some other things, it’s not a good default.

Played this just over a week ago. Demo was released in October but the game itself released in 13th February.
