What do you think is the best DE/WM for you?

I use ever thing but Openbox is on my main computer.

I’m using KDE Plasma and have daily driven it since day 1 of my Linux experience, after trying all major DEs in virtual machines first. Coming from macOS I’ve set it up with panels in a way that imho is the best of macOS and Windows combined and it is exactly the way I want it to be, it works and it looks good.

Admittedly I’ve had a few problems now with the Plasma 6 switch as I’m on a hybrid AMD/Nvidia laptop, it works great on Wayland in integrated mode but the few times I’ve actually switched on the Nvidia card on X11 it has been less stable than Plasma 5, I still have to tinker a bit. Even before that I had been thinking of trying to switch to a WM and customize it even more, but I haven’t had the time to try anyone out and I have a rule that on my main machine I only reinstall OS when I’m sure about switching, so I’ll still be on Plasma for the foreseeable future.

I used Plasma for years, but now I use Xfce. It has all I need that Plasma has (except some nice extras that are not mandatory), with the added benefit of being extremely responsive and lightweight. Xfce is so fast, everything except for the whisker menu plugin launches instantly and their GUIs are very responsive.

Xfce + Ulauncher for me, responsive, modular and Thunar batch renaming+custom actions are necessary.

Thanks for the dusk pointer…

Interesting that so many different wm s can be used on eos. Makes my want try some of them.

For me, Gnome and KDE seem to have separated themselves from the pack for DEs. XFCE was part of the big 3 before but development is too slow. I haven’t tried any WMs yet

Almost all of them can be used on most distros.

I’ve used KDE, GNOME, and LXDE for my DE’s and i3 and Hyprland as WM’s.

Best DE is KDE, but i like LXDE too (for my lightweight machines). I love i3 but Hyprland is probably the best in my opinion.

Best DE — KDE is hands down the best experience I’ve had on a full DE. That is, before it started stuttering with my device 2 years ago, forcing me to switch to Cinnamon (Nvidia over here :upside_down_face:). I now love and appreciate Cinnamon, though.

Best WM (have a few here):

  • i3 for work (great for screen sharing)
  • Bspwm for personal time when multitasking
  • dk for experimenting with something similar to both i3 and Bspwm
  • Openbox for when I want a DE feel but with customised tiling even though it’s not automatic

Liked my time in Gnome 3, Xfce, and Spectrwm.

Liked the idea of Herbsluftwm, but not the execution. So too Chadwm (but I used Arco’s configs because I REALLY NEEDED THEM).

Had a torrid time configuring Qtile and Awesome, as programming languages are just not for me.

Gnome, i3 and sometimes KDE and qtile because… dwm is decent too.

My favorites are in particular order Enlightenment, Awesome, Qtile, but this time around I thought I would try Ice wm for a while. never really been a fan of Desktops (well I still do love CDE).

After using using gnome since, red hat 9 (2003), I can tell you that KDE is too much.

It should always boil down to “use what you like best”. There is no “best” that counts except what you like ‘best’. Another’s opinion is just that, their opinion. As for what is too much, well that’s just another opinion (albeit, value based/ biased, your value)…

But don’t trust me, I’m just an old and opinionated geek.

don’t get me wrong I don’t hate Dektops in general they just have more features than I will ever use that’s all. Window Mangers just let use as many as you want to install they do not come with a ton out of the box like Desktop does.

There is a lot DE’s WM’s looks like each other…

if someone want to design a new WM on wayland, why not like DesqView…

i loved it… no panel or bar…with key you have a block of menu whatever it was you can switch between commandline …but atleast with menu to start something  got no idea something like that exist… ;à

KDE for me but I also don’t mind a few of the others like XFCE, lxQt, i3, Openbox all depends what I’m using the PC for and the PCs specifications

so basically a wallpaper and a thousand shortcuts? and a rofi sort of thing?
