What do you think is the best DE/WM for you?

i like many of them like gnome , xfce , kde but the one i like the most is hyprland

For me, the ability to remember window size and position is an absolute demand as long as I’m still not at a tiling WM. As far as I’m aware, this leaves just two options:

Fluxbox, for a window manager. I love it. Very configurable, you learn to set up everything from scratch, and it is fast. It works basically just like Openbox. For ease of use, one can set it up with a few key components from a full DE, such as LXQT or XFCE

Kde Plasma, where I’m currently at. I love Plasma as well, though the configuration is a bit overwhelming. Seems like I’ll never muster the energy to sit down and “rice” it to my liking.

Probably, I’ll stay on Plasma until a Fluxbox-like alternative is ready for Wayland.

I like Plasma. It’s good enough for me. As for WM, I don’t have any as I’m not interested in DIYing everything myself anymore.

I always use/run/have installed the following on a single-user space on eos:

bspwm
dwm
hlwm
i3wm
sowm
spectrwm

sometimes I add:
berrywm
dk
openbox
sdorfehs

Edit: Here’s a proof-of-life scrot of hlwm running on eos just minutes ago:

Edit-Edit: this probably truly falls into the ‘who cares’ bucket; but, I do the same on Debian and Vanilla Arch.

You might try labwc on wayland. It is like openbox more than fluxbox, but it is interesting (albeit pretty early in terms of maturity).

I like to keep up with the progress made in the various Desktop Environments and Window Managers. However, I keep coming back to Cinnamon as my daily driver for two reasons:

  1. It offers the best combination of features and configuration options for my particular use case.
  2. The screensaver (lock screen).

I like to use my monitor as a bedside clock. I can configure the clock on the Cinnamon Screensaver for the best readability. Honorable Mention should go Plasma, as there is a flip-clock screensaver that functions well in this regard.

Nice rice. Though you might want to consider changing the font color for the conky window on the bottom left corner of the screen. The light blue text is barely visible.

FWIW I view Wayland as promoting bloat for the simple reason that it so incredibly difficult to share keybindings for multiple desktops in a single-user space (plus the many work-arounds I have to make to obtain the functions, I am accustomed to having available). After having tried Sway and labwc for over a month (and having to bludgeon wayland functions into place) I returned to i3wm and hlwm, where stuff just works for me. I know x11 is old school and un-trendy. But then, that’s me, too (old and untrendy).

For any who care, I did an extensive write-up on my wayland journey, experiences. You can find that on my website, should you care.

That looks pretty nice! I’ve usually avoided the more esoteric WM/DE setups, but I like the looks of that.

Part of my thing is that I use my computer daily, for my business and don’t have a lot of time to keep experimenting with different setups.

I’ve been using plasma since 4.0 and that disaster. Prior to that, I tried a little bit of everything. I’ll take the risk of an occasional crash to have customization options. I quit using MacOS in 2007 because they started controlling too much of the UI.

'Tis true. But it is so hard to get a passel (bunch) of images that work with my theme (everforest). So I live with the odd mis-match. This is one of those. But I want to feel ‘springy’ so it’s okay for me. But you are correct another color would be more visual and appealing with this wallpaper.

I think you may have meant to respond to @anthony93’s comment about the font color, but no problem here.

Yep… never trust old guys to get things completely right. :older_man:
Heck, I’m glad I can still do anything in this plane. @anthony93

Hyprland, or River. Having made the switch to Wayland only compositors, I like that it’s being actively developed with regular updates, bug fixes and new features being added continually. As a DIY hobbyist, I enjoy building my system from a base EOS install, and putting in the time to set it up and make it my own.

Old days it was:

  • i3
  • bungie

Lately I have enjoyed hyprland via setup using

and modifying a few things. Really the only issue I have with hyprland is the POS Zoom client not knowing how to behave window-wise.

Been running Plasma 6 since it released and have zero issues. I think this might be the winner for my wife who is completely sick of Windows on her laptop which is why I am running that instead of Hyprland.

You and me both.

I’m much more boomer type person. Like stability and being able to customize (when I’m in the mood).

So,

  • XFCE
  • AwesomeWM

Is my top. Might give the new cosmic de a try when it comes out.

I have been an Openbox kind of guy. I also liked XFCE when i used it briefly, but went back to Openbox. It is simple, lightweight and does what I need.

That is a very respectable list of window managers. I’ve used several of those in the past myself.

None have yet mentioned Dusk, which is my default go-to why-use-anything-else for x11 tiling window manager. https://github.com/bakkeby/dusk/wiki

I’m a big KDE Plasma guy and use it on my production system, but I’m currently using Hyprland on an old shitbox HP laptop I’ve been renovating and it’s really quite good
