With openbox(and probably most of the WMs), some degree of configuration is needed to have something usable out of the box.

How is that handled? Do you build it into a package that drops the files into /etc/skel or is there some other method used?

But we didn’t drop that option, nor are we going to in the future

Such a package would be a sensible option.

Well, I’m just a hobbyist and, as they say about art, I just know what I like! I don’t do any clever stuff but occasionally use other people’s themes or ideas. I think that both Openbox and i3 in their own ways give a nice clean canvas. What is added is only a matter of personal likes. I switched from tint2 in Openbox and i3Bar (or i3Blocks) in i3 because Polybar works for both (you set up slightly different bars for each but you only need the one config file).

For me, Linux is such an elegant operating system (well, kernel I suppose) that I can’t see the need to plaster the desktop with a lot of extra stuff. I do like XFCE, but after using it for quite a few months, I have found what I want in Openbox and i3. In fact, I’ve gradually whittled down the sort of apps to use; for example I used Variety, then Nitrogen and now Feh for backgrounds. The next step is nothing at all!!!

Most Vim users are going to switch the movement keybindings in a flash to the vim ‘h, j, k, l’. It means switching Mod4+h for horizontal split to something else; I use Mod4 + n.

I think better to leave movement keys alone in i3 setup. Many users may be used to them (looking through some dotfiles, I noticed that surprising amount of people are leaving them at default), others can change them at any time.
I do use h/j/k/l though. Mod4+Control+h/v for splitting.

Thanks @Bryanpwo

I made a first post under Enlightenment section that I hope helps if you implement.

For what it’s worth, Enlightenment is just as stable for me as the aforementioned Moksha. It has come a long way.

You are more than welcome to the AL Openbox configs if you’d like them. I think we have done a pretty sweet job setting them up.

I don’t know much about enlightenment or open box although i have used openbox on Archlabs. :+1: I can see adding openbox as it was already on the early agenda and i3 is already here too although it needs some more polish. I like the idea of sway with i3. Not sure if the plan is to pick a couple of things and work on them or? Don’t want to see things get overloaded because the more things in the mix means more work for you guy’s and with all the changes in Calamares! I just don’t want to see that too much gets put on table that is not do-able in the time frame you are looking at. I can’t help much other than give my opinion as a user whether i like it or not.

In my opinion those wms basically “only” differ at their config.

The list of packages should be virtually the same to all of them IMHO, for example dwm, openbox, i3, Herbstluftwm, etc can have the same list of them pre-installed for example, firefox, leafpad, thunar/pcmanfm.

These are just examples, but I have in mind the list should include minimalism and less dependencies.

Openbox is ok, but there should also be a Warning or some underline, that you can’t install a openbox environment and lxqt on the same time, some settings hit each other , not to much but is especially alt-f2

maybe termite?

Also, mousepad over leafpad would have the advantage of being gtk3 instead of dealing with a mix of gtk2/gtk3 apps out of the box.

termite hasn’t been updated for a long time. https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/termite/

As is the case for terminator as well, which is currently installed with i3.
edit: seems like terminator package just got updated.

in my Awesome wm setup i use currently alacritty terminal and that terminal also comes back in Sway (as proposed terminal) personal i use also xed as my editor in awesome wm now, gives feedback about gedit

im also a gui savvy person

@anon61101858 Thank you for your offer, AL has a stunning Openbox set-up, I have it installed on an old laptop that I use for watching movies and series (and I am still in love with the original grey wallpaper) We wouldn’t dare to “hijack” your Flagship DE, on the other hand…

@ricklinux I know what you mean, but we know that the WMs mentioned aren’t going to be all realized, we’re aiming for the one or two that gets the most support.

Sure, I just gave some examples, for terminal possibly using xfce4-terminal is good enough, xfce4, lxqt and lxqt are very modular so we can grab their packages to wm with no harm.

Me too, xed is awesome, specially with cobalt theme  is very good for making scripts.

I might give the AL Openbox a try on my secondary computer to see how it compares with my setup. I think I need an extra computer! I believe those secondhand Thinkpads are good for linux.

A lot of similarities to gedit with cobalt theme, in my opinion…
