Virtualbox 6.1.12-4 fails

I have tried updating the mirrors. Still freezes. Getting really tired of this because i have been messing with it for days. My go to has always been virtual-box i don’t usually have any problems.

Edit: Needless to say Manjaro just froze trying to update it. :rage:

Well whatever Arch updates or it’s a Virtual-box problem i just get freezing. It’s useless and i can’t do anything with it.

Couldn’t he just change the default key server on the live iso?

@ricklinux you wouldn’t happen to have a PiHole or something similar, would you? I’m wondering if something on your network is causing issues.

Yes, but if it’s a common and on-going issue then anyone trying to install will be hitting the same thing.

Okay so i just wiped out my whole install and reinstalled again xfce with BTRFSonLUKS. Virtualbox is the problem freezing for whatever reason.

My network is good fibreoptic to computer. Traffic coming from outside Canada is sometimes not good. When i say not good i mean compared to what i’m getting.

I use the keyserver-rank but the problem still happens on virtualbox freezing when it starts downloading.

Long shot and I know you have been at this a while…

“Just released version 1.2-1 of keyserver-rank. Now it allows user to include a keyserver list file.
Try
keyserver-rank --help
for more details.”

Use these two keys:
hkps://keyserver.ubuntu.com
hkps://zimmermann.mayfirst.org

I honestly think there is a problem with virtual-box caused by Arch updates or virtual-box itself. You can get lucky and get something installed as i proved with manjaro but use it and it freezes. I’ve spent 2 days playing with this and i’m giving up until i see more updates. I haven’t been able to install any EndeavourOS desktop on virtual box yet without freezing.

Here virtualbox works when host has these versions:

$ pacman -Qs virtualbox | grep virtualbox
local/virtualbox 6.1.12-3
local/virtualbox-ext-oracle 6.1.12-1
local/virtualbox-host-dkms 6.1.12-3

and host is running linux-lts kernel. Virtualbox does not work here with 5.8 series kernel.

Guest can have the latest packages.

Eos xcfe install work ok here … no finish yet :crossed_fingers: (fininshed )

no problem Virtualbox 6.1.12-4 on kernel 5.7.12-arch1-1

(edit) sorry i should add this before

local/virtualbox 6.1.12-4
local/virtualbox-guest-iso 6.1.12-1
local/virtualbox-host-modules-arch 6.1.12-8

What about detailing which packages are necessary to work as it is now, and which ones from a downgrade, by name? All in a central location so users don’t have to search?

I can’t downgrade because they aren’t on this fresh install.

With the downgrade program?

Downgrade doesn’t need a pkg to be present to downgrade it. It can go searching and working from the archives too…

I don’t want to go all Arch here, but there’s a wiki page which has a lot of information about how to downgrade packages:

If you can let us know which bit you’re stuck on we can probably help.

I’m sorry but is this what we’ve come to all of a sudden? That if you don’t know how to do something then RTFM. There are lot of things i know how to do and do well and a lot that i don’t. More that i don’t than i do. This is the last thing that i want to see on here.

When i try to explain something to someone i try to give an explanation of all the steps because that’s how they learn. Once they do it then they understand. It’s all fine and dandy to read the Arch wiki but a lot of times it just doesn’t tell you the steps it just expunges technical data and leaves the user trying to understand what to do. I get really frustrated with this kind of stuff because i don’t think that is the way. That’s the problem with the Arch forum and the mods on there. I’m trying but this doesn’t help. I think i have only used downgrade once.

Which is why…

I agree, but you haven’t told us which bit you’re stuck on.

So, here:

sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/v/virtualbox/virtualbox-6.1.12-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/v/virtualbox-host-dkms/virtualbox-host-dkms-6.1.12-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
