Vboxconfig - virtualbox 6.1 & 6.0.6-arch1-1

I’m trying to install virtualbox for Homestead (Laravel).
I tried virtualbox 7 but I get stuck to “boot VM…”.
I tried to install virtualbox 6.1.8-2 and virtualbox-host-modules-arch-6.1.8-2.

If I launch virtualbox:

$ virtualbox
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no available for the current kernel (6.0.6-arch1-1) or it failed load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by
sudo /sbin/vboxconfig

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed

$ sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
sudo: /sbin/vboxconfig: Not found

$ sudo modprobe vboxconfig
modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxconfig not found in directory /lib/modules/6.0.6-arch1-1
$ uname -v -r
6.0.6-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat, 29 Oct 2022 14:08:39 +0000

Any tips?

Did you reboot?

Also, I guess this should be:

sudo modprobe vboxdrv

for loading the module manually.

The current virtual box is 7.0.2-1 and the extension package is 7.0.2-1 They work fine.

They run. I’m not sure I’d say they work “fine”.

I now have frequent slowdowns and freezes, neither of which existed in 6.x. That’s of course unrelated to OP’s issue; just sayin’.

$ sudo modprobe vboxdrv
modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found in directory /lib/modules/6.0.6-arch1-1

Issue #1807 is still open

Don’t have any issue on the current versions.

Can you explain what I can try to do? I simply need to install it?

$ pacman -S virtualbox vagrant
$ git clone # homestead...

Do i need to check anything else? On Ubuntu it works out-of-the-box.

I don’t use vagrant. I just use virtualbox.

Hello. After some time I tried with latest Endevour build but without success.
I followed up your link then get this error after a vagrant up:

$ vagrant up

That I solved with this:

 $ vagrant destroy -f

$ vagrant box remove laravel/homestead

There was an error while executing `VBoxManage`, a CLI used by Vagrant
for controlling VirtualBox. The command and stderr is shown below.

Command: ["import", "/home/lorenzo/.vagrant.d/boxes/laravel-VAGRANTSLASH-homestead/12.2.0/virtualbox/box.ovf", "--vsys", "0", "--vmname", "ubuntu-20.04-amd64_1672127719829_8383", "--vsys", "0", "--unit", "11", "--disk", "/mnt/archiveNTFS/virtualbox_VMs2/ubuntu-20.04-amd64_1672127719829_8383/ubuntu-20.04-amd64-disk001.vmdk"]

That I solved with:

 $ vagrant destroy -f
==> homestead: VM not created. Moving on...
$ vagrant box remove laravel/homestead
Removing box 'laravel/homestead' (v12.2.0) with provider 'virtualbox'...
$ rm -r /home/.config/Virtualbox

$ sudo vboxreload

But now I’m stucked here:

$ vagrant up
Bringing machine 'homestead' up with 'virtualbox' provider...
==> homestead: Checking if box 'laravel/homestead' version '12.2.0' is up to date...
==> homestead: Clearing any previously set network interfaces...
==> homestead: Preparing network interfaces based on configuration...

    homestead: Adapter 2: hostonly
==> homestead: Forwarding ports...
    homestead: 80 (guest) => 8000 (host) (adapter 1)
    homestead: 443 (guest) => 44300 (host) (adapter 1)
    homestead: 22 (guest) => 2222 (host) (adapter 1)
==> homestead: Running 'pre-boot' VM customizations...
==> homestead: Booting VM...

Maybe you’re experiencing something similar to this Cannot start VirtualBox machines

I don’t use vagrant so i really don’t know much about it. Virtualbox hasn’t been working for me so I’m using vmware workstation because it has no issues.

Edit: Just reinstalled virtualbox and i have it working again.

Edit: Still doesn’t work properly with 3d settings required for community editions.

Edit2: Sticking with vmware.

I know that you don’t know vagrant but I’m asking about it.

Everything works fine out-of-the box into Windows, Ubuntu and MacOS and I’m trying to figure out how to make it works on EndevourOS.

Your post was addressed to me so I just answered. But maybe someone else will have an idea. I haven’t heard of anyone talking about vagrant so i don’t know if anyone uses it.

Hello,

I had similar issues with vagrant+virtualbox. It turned out vagrant was triggering kernel traps.

Check your logs to make sure you have the infamous “Mising ENDBR” trap, after you execute vagrant up. You could do it like this

journalctl -k --grep=ENDBR

If it returns any entries add ibt=off to your kernel command line and reboot. Vagrant should work after that.

T H A N K S :heart:
I had this:

$ journalctl -k --grep=ENDBR
jan 07 01:54:52 hostname kernel: traps: Missing ENDBR: _nv012308rm+0x0/0x10 [nvidia]

Then, after adding ibt=off to GRUB params:

$ journalctl -k --grep=ENDBR
-- No entries --

Now everythings work like a charm!

$ sudo pacman -Qs virtualbox
local/linux 6.1.3.arch1-1
    The Linux kernel and modules
local/virtualbox 7.0.4-3
    Powerful x86 virtualization for enterprise as well as home use
local/virtualbox-host-dkms 7.0.4-3
    VirtualBox Host kernel modules sources

$ vagrant -v
Vagrant 2.3.4
