I have downloaded a bootable ISO from lenovo so I’m just going to check that out. It will take me some time. Don’t be in a rush.
I should have supper right now anyway. I’ll be back after
Okay I tried the lenovo download and it looks like some type of bootable flash program but i don’t trust trying it as it looks like something out the 90’s dos era! ![]()
Edit: I prefer doing it from a Windows boot disc or from the Firmware settings if it has that feature. Most Lenovo products have Lenovo Advantage or the commercial version that run on Windows and it takes care of Bios and firmware updates. Unfortunately no Linux version of this software.
Okay so i downloaded the Hirens boot disc ISO and booted on it. I was able to download the Bios file which is an .exe I tried running the .exe file on the booted Hirens disc but obviously it won’t work on my system to run the utility. As far as I can tell it should run directly from the .exe file and do what it’s supposed to do to flash the new UEFI Firmware (Bios). You should not have to extract from an .exe file so I don’t know why you are getting this 7zip stuff? ![]()
Hope this helps. ![]()
Edit: I was surprised to see that the Hirens boot disc is updated to Windows 11 which is great.
Having dessert soon so will still be just a little bit
Well I probably had Lenovo Advantage at some point, but well, you know, it got snapped in my endeavours one could say. Reduced to ashes
If only it was so easy. But no, the universe just had to say no for some reason I feel I will likely not get an answer to.
Even if you aren’t going to run it, wouldn’t looking at the extracted files be good so you have an idea on your end what the 4 options are?
I’m just saying normally when it is an .exe file you don’t have to do anything but run the file. The utility does what it’s set up to do.
Also note to self - remember to take care of stuff like this BEFORE switching to Linux on a new laptop. Would save a huge headache. Just need to learn how to say no to Microsoft to asking me to log in to a microsoft account online just to use my own computer my lord if that isn’t just the worst thing ever. Only learned about this after getting this new laptop my hatred for windows was renewed after finding that out
You usually can change back to a local account but I’m not sure if that’s been changed. I heard it was going to be so you couldn’t on Windows 11 updated versions.
I tried to extract with 7zip in linux and move it to the usb which it did not work, but yes, 7zip is on the hirens usb and where I extracted the exe.
So I’m going to ask again. Did you boot on the Hirens disc you created and did you have the updated bios file on the Hirens disc when you attempted to run the .exe file. Just so I know we’re on the same page here. ![]()

I was originally for some reason going to let windows install itself before switching to Linux but then it basically forced me to log into a Microsoft account. Maybe it wouldn’t emforce it if I wasn’t connected to the Internet but at that point I just noped and got my usb ready and looked up the get into bios during boot up key lol
Yes installing Windows it forces you to log in to set it up but afterwords you can change it to a local account. But like i say I did hear rumors that was about to change. ![]()
Unless I have been hallucinating and faking photos to post to this forum, I do believe I have multiple times booted into Hirens usb successfully. Same with downloading the BIOS file each time I booted in as well since using a usb is inconvenient with a disabled touchpad and having to rely on using my second usb port for a wireless mouse as a workaround
I wasn’t going to allow Microsoft the pleasure of forcing me to log in the first time around, so the fact you can switch after doesn’t mean much haha
What .exe did you run after extracting it? I got 4 different ones after extracting it
I forget the name now as I deleted them from my usb so when I flash my bios next update I do not use a file left behind from that exe as it’s the wrong one for mine.
Wait, I just realised. Aren’t the .exe and the bios file the same thing? Yet thr way you phrase it here makes it seem like two things. There was only one thing I could download as far as I know.
Yes it’s only one file. It’s an exe file which should run on the Hirens boot disc and flash the bios in the process.
