That was actually one of the better, more philosophical, videos by DT, in my opinion.
And oh boy, did it rustle some jimmies!

Stopped following him over a year ago. Stopped following 90% of linux youtubers.
Whoa, what happened here?
The threadā¦
Didnāt foresee that it will be so controversial and some people will ā¦
Iāll be more conservative when it comes to post something.
Of course Iām curious about Linux or I would never have started using it in the first place. That doesnāt mean I want to build my life around it. I need to know Linux well enough for it to serve my needs and just a bit more to help me understand whatās going on under the hood. Beyond that, I have too many other things to do. Iām a DT fan & subscriber by the way, but I donāt always agree with him.
This is where I think a huge line goes.
There are basically three kinds of Linux users, as far as I see it (four, if you count server admins that handle cloud networks and whatnot but thatās not relevant here)
Coders / Developers who use Linux because thatās what their boss has installed on their machines. So most likely Ubuntu (maybe pure Debian but Ubuntu is so much easier to get working on a random laptop) or Fedora with Gnome. No customization, no extensions, no ricing, no nothing, just a working tool.
People who use it as an everyday desktop, pick a favorite DE and then just use it for daily home use (budget, surfing, emails, and thatās it) and if their tool of preference donāt work in Linux they go back to iOS or Windows.
Open Source advocates, ranging from the āOpen Source is coolā to āNever trust anyone everā who DO build their whole (at least online) life around this and at their best advocate for Open Source and at the worst insult and borderline threaten other computer enthusiasts (As well as posting cringe memes about how every windows update they have ever done bricked their computer, somehow).
I am in group 2, and I have a suspicion that most people curious about Linux is in that group. But thatās almost never the group we hear about online. We NEVER hear from group 1, since they get help from their companyās IT department.
Double moral just ⦠
Oh, thereās always Windows for that ā¦
Unfortunately not for me. I left Windows in 2013 and never looked back. No idea whatās going on in Win land.
In Winland, everyone is going crazy because a new toy has been thrown at them.
Most users jump from Windoze to Linux because of genuine privacy concerns and control.
Being able to build your own custom open source system tailored to your specific needs and likes, free from invasive spyware, is the carrot most Linus users are lured by.
Open source is crucial for transparency, but how invested or involved a user is with open source communities is irrelevant. Making the move to open source software is a good enough, although bug reporting upstream can be valuable and beneficial for other users.
How deep someone dives after making the jump is also irrelevant. Continual learning very is important as most Linux systems are not turnkey set and forget, but insisting on more than that sounds like the type of zealotry that makes sensible people uncomfortable.
Agree that most YT Linux channels these days are struggling to find anything remotely interesting or worthwhile to say.
I laugh at distro āreviewsā that install an OS into a VM, boot it, talk about the UI theme, and go through software installed. That is basically it. They all do it, each review as useless as any other one.
Yes. It is like they go out of their way to discuss all that things that donāt matter and none of the things that do.
This the impression people who are new to Linux get and then they start chasing distros trying to find one with the right theme and the software they prefer pre-installed.
Well, at least in German-speaking countries, itās not that bad. There are quite a few good Linux Youtubers. Unfortunately, the best of them has made himself scarce (unicks.eu). DistroTube on the other hand I never liked ā¦
Distro reviews are like cotton candy: fluffy, mostly air, and harmless if consumed in moderation. I still enjoy watching them though. A bit of a guilty pleasure I suppose.
Yeah, even ignorant me has heard about Win11, turned around and fell asleep again.
Absolute nonsense! The only person in this thread throwing insults is you.
Pet peeve of mine also. I want them to live with the OS, live, for at least a month, share the pains, the joys, the WTF moments. Not some VM install and scoot around the screen clicking on default apps. Click bait Linux influencers, I swear.
Yeah those guys lack some perspectiveā¦
Unlike āLFS installā or āGentoo installā 10-16 hours video sagas
P.S. Iād like to see some day a review of āIāve used Suicide LInux for month, and hereās what iāve learnedā¦ā
OH, I can do that easy!!!
Iāve learned I canāt type without errorsā¦
