NO its BSD that is Unix, before Linux was born, or windows for that. it also shows that Unix/Linux can be turned into a something else
FreeBSD has a very clear path to follow and it is not exactly joining Linux.
As leading institutions they are, each in their own house, although sometimes reality says other things …
Topic of lengthy debate.
As someone who gives several talks a year at academic conferences (at least I did pre-covid), I would note that dealing with AV setups at random hotels and universities around the world can be a *#@! nightmare, and I can understand wanting to remove any added layers of complexity that linux might bring to that process. Then again, I don’t work for the linux foundation, lol.
What hardware do you use?
Gone are the days when I had 15 desktop computers in my bedroom as build clusters for Arch Linux. Today I’m more of a minimalist, prioritizing mobility over screen size or computing power.
I presently carry a 2012 MacBook Air 11" around with me wherever I go. I maxed out the RAM (8GB) and put an SSD in it, and it’s just a beautiful little machine. I’m not a big fan of OS X though, so it runs Arch.
When doing research into Linux one thing that came up over and over in my reading was that Linux is much more secure than other operating systems (particularly windows) due to having such a small share of the PC market. So I always thought dedicated AV software isn’t necessary for Linux distros…
I appreciate your point about AV etc being a nightmare to set up when away from home. However, I would expect a member of the Linux foundation to be able to navigate “added layers of Linux complexity” such as AV/VPNs otherwise why are they members of the Linux foundation in the first place…
Nothing personal, just business (c)
Linux foundation is basically a front for communication with big bad corporations (pretty much all of them), which are investing in open-source / Kernel strictly for their particular business interests, they don’t care about Linux / philosophy etc…
I mean, if you look at that it’s very obvious that they’re not out friends here ![]()
Well that makes a lot of sense…
So in that case I see no point in continuing to debate about the actions of an inauthentic, disingenuous organisation.
Thanks for the headsup.
I think he’s referring to “Audio/Visual” connections.
Thanks mdoverl my bad.
AV to me means anti virus… I can’t speak much for the Audio/Visual software side of things.
But as I said I see no point in this debate anyway. The actions of Linux Foundation are of no concern to me… All they do is show what side they really support/use.
It has always been my opinion that many of the million/billionaire and large corporation “foundations” should be viewed with suspect. Money laundering, tax-loop holes;
“The most egregious type of philanthropy is when companies “reputation-wash,” or wash away their sins by donating a fraction of their revenue.”
Not saying all are bad, but the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear that word.
I dared to start using a Mac precisely because it is internally Unix-based, and I have known Linux for twenty years, which is also Unix-based.
